Boxes

Those are some good looking boxes how did you do the insides? Wire mesh?

Hi chris

I didnt make them, I bought them from Amazon. LOL

$47 and some change with free shipping.

They have wire mesh on the inside for the ducklings to climb.
They are made of cedar and have a door on the side for cleaning.

Great job! Good looking boxes too.

You need to put predator guards up on those beautiful boxes or coons and snakes might harvest all the eggs and maybe the hen.

I cut all branches and tall grasses away from the nest box each Spring too. That keeps snakes from reaching the box even with predator guards.

These two black rats made it inside this box last year and ate every egg.

That is a great thing to do, Doug. What direction is the box facing and does it make a difference? I don't know.

Thanks Taylor I do plan on putting a shield on each post so the snakes and other critters are kept out.

Hi Al

I have them facing south, most wind here comes from the west and north.

I put mine on steel sign posts that I got from public works shop out in the water. BTW I found a set of plans that get 3 out of a single sheet of exterior plywood. I will check it out and post more details, I think it was from the Wash or Oregon DNR. Not cedar but they probably will outlast me. " A good plan today beats a perfect plan tomorrow"

Thanks Tom

I would like to here about the plans you have on them.
I went with 8 ft treated fence posts for these, they will last a long time and I think they look rustic.
It was easy putting them in as my ponds are bone dry at this time of year.
They fill up with the snow melt and if we get some good rain before the ground thaws out thats even better.

Hey Doug, I just noticed that you're in MT! Sad to say it's been nearly 15 years since I hunted up that way. We hunted out of Lewistown all the way up to Malta at Lake Bowdoin. Gorgeous country!

You'll love messing with the boxes. I re-habbed 19 old abandoned boxes on our local lake and as of yesterday I've had 303 wood ducks and 3 Carolina Wrens hatch and get out of the boxes. It helped me survive our hot summer while dreaming of duck season!
