Brant spread

I am heading to Oregon later this month for brant. I should have about ten cork brant ready. I have a few other brant decoys to get me over a dozen.

Should I make up some V-board to fill out the spread?

Here's one of my brant. I try to make it quick.

I guess it all depends on location, but last season I ran 2 dz floaters, and 8 v-boards so 24 more decoys.

We mainly ran our friends rig of 4dz floaters most days though. Too bad you dont get your season in march when they're coming back up, fully feathered. Beautiful birds.

Adam., where did you get the plastic planking for the base. We always had to make ours out of 2x2's. I have never seen ana ctual plastic spread base before. Very interesting. Dave Church

Andy, I have used some old carry lite goose decoys about a doz. or so and gave them a quick change over paint job to brant, paint the eye patch black add three white lines on the neck this worked for me in indian river in del. But remember to keep these on the inside with the real brant decoys that you made on the outer side and you should be fine . It only takes about 24deeks to maybe 30 good luck don't forget to take pics so we can see it all.

I was searching through the internet one day thinking about making my own out of wood, and came across a company, called Sitting Ducks I think. They make them, so I got them shipped up here and made some silos to go on them.

You are right they are beautiful in the spring with the spring sun on them!

The Carrylite brant are super cute if you can find them.

I have a handful of Herters, foam and plastic, I can use. However, I am considering leaving them and only using the ones I make. The only reason, if I do bag a couple brant it will be that much sweeter. It shouldn't take too long to knock out a few v-boards. Most of it would be in paint.

I get flocks of thousands of Brant around here.
It seems to be more of a question of location, location , location. You want to set up where the Brant want to be. Shallow mud flats with lots of sea weed, eel grass and sea lettuce.
They seem to decoy to almost anything. I have some old decoys with some white paint on the sides mixed in with a few Blacks and Mallards and they come right in.
Have you tried Haydel's Brant call made by Reedy Creek Outfitters, if not you have to get one. They are easy to use and sound great. Use it with a few decoys and I'm sure you will do great.

Good luck

I also have another sheet of black cork that I am considering cutting some more out of. Mainly just to use the stuff up. However, time is getting short.

I guess we are too quite on here.

Two long time people on DHBP are the current owners of the Sitting Ducks V Board Company. We have hunted brant in MD over them, eiders in Maine, cans in Wisconsin and sea ducks in Washinton over them with a lot of sucess.

If anyone is interested, our website is: www.sittingducks-ltd.com

John I use my regular goose call by blowing into it with the fluttering of the tounge word Prrrr, Prrrr, Prrrr, this works for me.

Cas,

I'm sure that works. I have been able to make a pretty good sound buy doing the same thing with and without a call. But if your into hunting Brant, try this new call. It is very easy to master and the tone is perfect. I'm sure you wont be disapointed. I was shocked at how well it worked for a call thats under $40.

I should have a dozen ready to go by next week. I only have to attach some heads and keels. I still haven't made the final decision but I don't think I will bring my factory decoys, just my corks. I decided not to make the V-boards. Or maybe time decided for me. A few sick days can really blow your schedule.

I have those same V-Boards and just cut out a dozen silos for them out of some 1/4" luan. I'm not sure how to attach them. They look like they were made for those thin plastic silos. They came with these small plastic key looking things but I don't know what they are for, they didn't come with any directions. I think it was Carl who posted up some some home made ones, I'll have to go back and search the archives for them. What did you make your silos out of?

Phil use the link to contact Sitting Ducks they can help you out with your questions.

I assume the key you are talking about is the key to lock the decoy "arm" in the desired angle. I would just screw your luan silos to the arm and you should be good to go, but the guys at Sitting Ducks will help you out with anything you need they are some stand - up folks.
