Breathables vs neoprene

3rd season in Cabelas breathables. I absolutely love them. Great when it's warm and I simply layer up when it's cold. Very light and easy to walk around in. I don't feel like I'm wearing a space suit with them on. I won't go back to neoprenes.

I have both, and if I had to choose only one, I'd go with breathables. Easier on and off, and you can layer to account for changes in temperature. My 2 cents worth.

Same here. There 5 mil ones are sure nice if you are hunting water with any ice on it though. Those chunks can bruise up you shins.

Breathables down to about 15 deg F. for me Dwight. All I wear under them are some of the fleece lined Drake hunting pants. If I were to layer some long underwear underneath, I could go colder.

It has been such an improvement over neoprenes, I'm like Eric in wishing they had a version with 1600 grams of Thinsulate in the boots. Best I can find are 600 (or is it 800). The Cabelas top of the line are good waders. 3rd season in them and not a hint of a leak. One thing to mention on the Cabelas product, they do tend to fit much tighter in the chest, belly, area. With neoprenes they would stretch, with breathables, they don't stretch.

As far as flotation, the breathables will hold air very well. Get some air on the legs and it will float you no problem.

Dwight and duckboat readers,
CORRECTION.....I use the Lakewood, not Lakeside fan for drying my breathables.

Does anyone make a breathable wader with a 1200+ gram boot?

the last breathables I bought were from LL bean
they have 1200 gram insulated boots, called the helix
comfortable , warm, and you don't sweat

would highly recommend them, mine are 5 yrs old now and still going strong

Thanks, Tom. I may retire my cold weather neoprenes as well.

I wear Warrior II's from Cabelas, breathable up top 1.5 neo in seat and legs. I wear my wools underneath in the cold, this morning was 10 degree's and they did fine. They don't sell them presently

Eric. Rogers has a breathable wader w 1200g thinsulate. $189.99

I have a pair of cablas dry plus breathables w thinsulate in boot. Not sure of grams? The only thing I don.t like is the boot is uncomfortable when I'm in water deeper then 2 ft. Feels like its collapsing and cuting into the top of your foot. Have not warn them in really cold weather, I always had a a pair of 5 mil neoprene. Very bulky and tight to get on in cold weather. Last year we were walking my friends TDB 14 to deeper water to start the motor. After getting it started I could not climb back on board. Felt like a tuna with a gaff in him that you can't get over the rail and into the cockpit. Needed an assist gaff to get slid onto the deck. I either have to loose weight, move into stout size, or go to 3 mil. for flexability in cold weather.

I'm going to stick w the breathables for as much of the season as I can. First time I get cold I.ll break out the 5s. I've never been cold in the 5s. I just don't like feeling like a fish out of water .

Thanks all for the comments. The local Cabela's did not have my size so I ordered online. I checked out the LL Bean breathables but there was a 7 month backorder!

Have you guys checked out USIA? They will custom fit a pair of breathables with 7 mm neoprene Bogs boots I believe they are. The chest area goes up to the armpits and they are pretty much armor proof. Same company that makes the military drysuits and other water proof clothing for them.
