Does anyone have a pic of a broad bill with a motor on ?I would like to see one . How much HP are they rated for ?

Check out this link to Devlin Boats. Scroll down the page, the specs are down the page a bit. Also has a lot of good info about the other Devlin Duck Designs.

I have never built a Devlin Boat but many in this forum have. the Scaup that Eric P built is hopefully going to be my second build.

Thank you for the pics . That is a pretty nice looking boat . I just dont want to bite off more then i can chew .

Very nice boat ! I love the paint . I have plenty of bigger boats .Takeing kids out and guideing i look forward to a me hunt so i think this would be the boat . But i would also use it for a learner boat for me to build and my kids to learn how to drive a boat and handle one . Would an 8hp 4 stroke push it ok . I bet it would scream with a 15 on it .

Thanks. I've since repainted her to open water gray... these boats are versatile!!
Anyway, with the 15hp, me+gear+dog+3 doz. dekes were doing 21mph (GPS) on calm water at 3/4 throttle. I was too nervous to go any more. an 8HP will push it ok but it may or may not get up on plane. I had a very, very, hard time getting up on plane with the old 9.5 Johnson, if at all, with any load at all....

Very nice ! Your paint jobs are Amazeing ,they really look great . The boats lines look so smooth and flow very well .

Bill,

The old 9.8 merc pushed the boat at 18-19 mph with just me, and 14-15 fully loaded for hunting. The Yamaha 15 pushes it at 25.5 mph, but there is probably room for inprovement since the rpms are maxed.

It's not a hard boat to build, and a joy to hunt.

Feel free to ask any questions.

I was looking at the material list and the plywood calls for 2-16ft .Can you buy 16 footers ? I know i could scarf ,i would feel better not though .

Bill,

Most people by 4x8 and scarf them to make the longer sheets (see Eric's "Building Devlin's Scaup). It looks intimidating, but is not really that hard.

A Broadbill built precisely to plans really only needs 3 sheets of hull/side/deck material, but you need to be careful as there is little room for error.

Now the plans call for to sheets of 4x16 plywood if you scrf they would be less then 16 do to the scarf correct ?

Yes, you the length of one scarf.

Another interesting point is the most of the marine okoume is imported and comes in metric sizes, so it is not exactly 4x8 ft.

This is a great thread...really gets me fired up for boat building...keep the pictures coming if you please.

I have seen it mentioned that the two 4X16 sheets can in reality be two 4X12 footers. If this is correct????then scarfing, and handeling, twelve foot lengths would be easier than sixteens.

While I need another boat like a hole in the head, the broadbill is destined to someday be that hole.

Love the pics of your guys boats.

Mike

Yes Mike, the hull can be built with two 4x12 sheets. I did it that way. I had purchased four 4x8 sheets.. I simply made one into two 4x4 and I still had one 4x8 sheet left over for the misc. pieces, decking, and all.

Best,
Brian F.

Hi Bill B,
How was your season this year? Mine was good for the most part but didn't get to use the boat that much, and ironically not at all as a layout, so I don't know if the new paint job is effective or not. Ha!

Anyway, I was wondering do you ever use oars that much with your Broadbill? I never put the oar lock blocks on; have been thinking I should, but never really needed them.... I've used a canoe paddle a number of times picking up the dekes, but that's about it...

Just thinking too much, I guess....

Best,
Brian F.
