Broadbills...

I just finished my third viewing of Steve Sanford and Craig Kessler's When Broadbill was King on the Great South Bay. How inspiring! I also have been reading Eugene V. Connett's book Duck Decoys, How to Make Them, How to Paint Them, How to Rig Them. Great timing as Mr. Connett was from Bellport. If you haven't seen it, great decoy making book. A small and simple book with a host of patterns from the Long Island Region. I particularly like the Bartow Broadbill Pattern, copied it, went out in the shop and, tried my hand at a Long Island cork decoy. Steve, I hope I didn't butcher it too bad.

Those are some nice specimens. Hoping to get one like those for the wall this winter. Planning to go out of state to try to make it happen.

Sorry Joe! It's all I had but, believe if the Boyles and Howells had access to tan cork, they would have used it... :)

Pat, I do believe your decoys have seen broadbills before.

Good morning, Pat~

What a fine tribute to a fine species! I do not own Connett's Decoys book but just re-read Edgar Burke's chapter on decoys in Duck Shooting Along the Atlantic Tidewater a couple of days ago.

Interesting about the tan cork, too. In the film, I really enjoy John Verbeke explaining how some of those "refrigerator cork" birds could "explode" when they got some frost in them - as well as Dick LaFountain explaining how they coated them with roofing tar. Unfortunately, we had to cut Dick's discussion about using WWII surplus balsa life rafts for the bodies on their Brant rig.

Looking forward to the paint !

I bought some white cedar, cut it down to 4' lengths, painted the ends and stashed it in the garage attic to dry out. When I was up there I discovered some broadbills I had in work 20 years ago. I might finish them to hunt over this year. Remember that I haven't hunted in 27 years.

Great looking pictures, I can still remember hunting the bonus season for Broadbills. It was great seeing the flocks decoy, and is one memory that I hope I never forget.

I have that decoy book from Connett..Awesome..
What long time waterfowler hasn't developed a secret love affair with broadbills?!!
Would have loved to have attend Steve and Craig's presentation but had to man my booth at the Ward Melville HS Tackle show that same day..

Not directly related to any Daly's that are steamfitters. My branch of the Daly clan immigrated from Galway in 1870-s. Fairly traceable to Dutchess County in 1890 Census.
