Camo Shotgun Stripping/Refinishing

Got back from Arkansas late Saturday night. Thomas and I had a great trip. More on that later.

I have a question about camo finishes on shotgun. Can they be stripped? Anybody have experience with taking a gun back to it's black finish or going with a different camo pattern?

Eric

Any insect repellant with DEET will strip the heck out of a camo-dipped shotgun. LOL

Seriously, most have a light grey primer under them, as the dipping is merely film applied paint....no matter who says what, it's paint, with a high tech way of applying it by using opposing electronic charges and dipping to keep the pattern intact. You could soak all the metal in acetone, and it should reduce it to bare or make the finish and primer wipe off easily. You'd have to take care of it until refinished, as it'd rust like crazy. Some of the teflon and ceramic coatings and even good, phosphate parkerizing are more durable and solvent resistant.

Yep, Benelli factory camo. I suspect the acetone dip would get it off but the plastic stock and forend might suffer. Of course theose parts are replaceable at some cost. There are a few places where the camo is chipping and I didn't see any primer beneath. Might be there I'll look closer. It does look like the finish underneath is the standard black uncamoed finish. I'd have to remove more to see.

Eric, an orange-based solvent might remove the stuff from the stocks w/o harming them. I think you could even use bug spray, though it does like to eat recoil pad rubber, too. WD-40 removes some paints pretty good, but camo dip should be resistant to that. YOu could call Walter Birdsong's place and ask him....if you can get him. I'm sure he strips them daily for applying his coatings in their place.
