Carving Knives?

Started doing a bit of chip carving lately since I can do it in the house and don't have any dust to deal with. Been using a Warren knife with the replacable blades but really want something a bit nicer. I also suck when it comes to sharpening blades so that is a skill I will have to learn. What is everyone using for carving knives and where could a person get a good deal on them?

See if Hunt'n Dave will sell you one of his. I won one at a get together a year or so ago and it's my favorite knife.

He was also suppose to put together a tutorial on how he made them, but I never saw it. (got to give him a little $hit)

Lee,

For the money, it's hard to beat FlexCut knives. They hold an edge, are easy to maintain with a strop, and are inexpensive at $20 each. Woodcraft.com has all of the models. Also, Curt's carving knives are awesome if you'd like to spend a little more:) They're out of Louisiana by mail-order only. You'll have to yellowbook'em to get a phone number. What every you do, buy a good quality knife and you'll be much happier in the long run.

I mostly use Lyons knives with a few odd ones that I came across over the years. You can never have too many! Lyons sells his knives for about $30 ea., You can go a long way on 3 knives. A tupelo knife is a must.

Good luck!

I'll second that...not only are his knives my favorites, but the idea of getting him to do a tutorial on making them!

Custom is nice!

Thanks for the replies. So what style of blade does everyone like to use the most for general shaping?

I think I have owned and tried just about every knife out there. In the end, Cape Forge were and still are the best. Their blades are surgical sharp, and Karen will resharpen any CF knife for free - you just pay the shipping. I sold all of my other knives and bought 6-8 Cape Forge knives. The #9 knife is great for general stuff, but I've been using the longer tupelo-style blade a lot too.

Give them a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I like Lyons knives. It is also nice to be able to go and pick one up. He is located around Dayton, so it is fairly convenient for me.

I have other knives, but the three Lyons models I have are:
#132s
right hand bent (this is the one I picked up in person)
#114d
The last price list I have puts them at $26.50. The phone number is 937 426-0085.

The bent blade gives me capabilities that I don't think you can really get from a regular flat blade. That being said, how can you live without at least a small set of gouges?

I love my cape forge knives. They take a wicked edge.
Not the only choice, but a good one if you go that way.

Get their leather strop and their lapping compound.

I just bought a cape forge #2 knife it should be here in a couple weeks. Looks like a great product. I will let you know how it carves
