Choke tube question

Looking for a few opinions about aftermarket chokes. They seem to range widely in price, does performance justify cost? Are they really better for steel shot than factory chokes? I generally shoot an o/u with ic / mod factory chokes. no complaints but if I could do better...

i dont shoot an over end under but i do shoot an undertaker choke tube my local sporting goods store (sportco in fife) gave me a 100% money back gaurantee said i know you will be impressed
So i patterned it with my hunting loads and noticed a lot denser than the factory mod choke and stayed denser longer definantly worth the money too me although i do think 80 somthing dollers is still steep for a choke tube
somthing else i noticed was all the wads seemed too be spread into perfect x every time and i didnt get that with the mod choke
P S i shoot a franchi 912 semi and love that gun factory said no choke tighter than mod for steel but i have since used the factory full with no ill effects hope this helps Scott

I suppose it probably depends on the gun and the particular factory chokes.

I have had good luck with Benelli factory chokes but Winchester/Browning removable ones see to pattern poorly. I found after market Briley chokes pattern much better. Although the fixed chokes from browning work fine, lol.

Make and use a patterning board and you'll know for sure!

I just bought a new choke for my benelli. I bought a Walkers Wad Wizard Surpreme Works absolutely amazing 35 to 40 yards on eiders stone dead using Kent Faststell 3.5 BB. Then yesterday took 2 heads off canadas at about 30 yards I think the proof is in the pudding.

Test pattern the choke tubes you have with the loads you like. If you get good performance, why change. Custom tubes seen to have better patterns with large shot, BB and larger. Unless you are getting bad performance with your existing tubes, than save your money. If you use Hevi-shot, or the real high velocity steel loads, than get tubes that are strong enough to handle it.

As stated shoot a 4' paper square at 40 yds with your load of choice in the mod. choke. Count the pellets in a 30 inch circle. Buy a Briley extended Improved modified and shoot again and see how you like it. Remember to look for even distribution. One pattern does not make a rule so a few may be needed to get the picture. You may be very interested to see what one load does compared to another. If your load patterns 95 to 100 pellets or better evenly you will have very few ducks that can get by it, if you do your part. Or you can take marks advice and get um close with small shot and open chokes.
If you really get into it you can find an old airport and get your wife to tow a 30 foot trailer with paper on a frame to see what shot string and lead looks like at 40 mph crossing.

How far is a good lead on a wife? When patterning, do it from a solid benchrest too. It will show where your gun is shooting. I thought mine was shooting to the right but after doing it on a bench, I found my flinch tossed it off a bit.

Better yet, round up all the Sea Doo's on your favorite lake and have them tow the trailer.Keep the tow rope short,(about 6ft)so that the target tow don't get wet.:o) OOOOPPS

Joe, I have to hide the guns in the summer time. My wife wants to test out her 7mm 08 on Jet ski's in July. If they knew what she's thinking (; )

Pete that's funny. A couple decades ago, before they invented these terrible contraptions, the most we had to deal with was skiers.I'd be out sailing and they would come flying by,disturbing the peace and quite, and wave.Right, like I'm going to wave back.LOL. The only time I said anything was when they fell .Then I yelled ,"DON'T LET GO THE ROPE":^)
Loved it when they went skipping over the waves.
