Some of you may recall my post a few weeks back about the short story, "The Ledge". The current issue of DownEast Magazine has a story that gives the background on the events the story was base on an its author. Again, if you're a cold-weather hunter, it may be better not to let your love ones know the story.

I agree 110% Jeff,,,Love to hunt storms,,,,,my buddy said to me when i showed them pics of the new starcraft 22 and i quote"I cant imagine what kinda weather ya want to goo ut in now!!" My response jokingly was Cat 2 huricane maybe?? depends on the direction of the seas....lol

My reply is usually.."we don't discuss that in mixed company....."

My wife is aware of the risks, as I am, she trusts that I'll make good decisions. Things happen......

Hi Jeff -

Thanks for posting this. I was not aware of the story and plan to read it.

Seas down here were over 15 feet this morning offshore.

Dick, I heard there were some gusts over 70 mph out on Criehaven--an island way offshore.

This site is pretty cool for tracking waves and wind on the ocean: http://neracoos.org/realtime_map

I just read the whole story Jeff; great read. I have had my share of close calls and closer shaves over the years. I am very careful now. Thought about turning around on Saturday in Stockton as the wind blew and chop grew. One time on Champlain at the end of '02, I went out by myself on the broad lake to an island known to attract lots of late season blacks and mallards. There was a ripping southwest wind and 2-3' waves. The southbay could handle those if you were careful. It was also about 20 degrees out. I waited for the light to come up before I rounded the point into the big water. About halfway into my 2 mile ride, my engine started faltering and then quit. The bow immediately went into the next wave. The boat, the dog and I were all covered with ice. I managed to get to shore, bail out the boat andf finally get the motor going. I turned back towards the launch and put the boat on the trailer- I never launched that boat again....
