Christmas GE finally done

First, I have to thank Chuck J and Pauly for the motivation to finally finish my GE decoy after almost 2 years. It was their constant and unwavering heckling and bad jokes that got me through those long nights, hahaha.

This GE is for my 3 1/2 year old son, Chase. It will be his first decoy in the tradition of "a decoy ever year" so he'll have his own carve rig to hunt over when he's 12 (thanks for the idea, Brian). I've got to double up this year to make up for lost time so Pauly is carving him a cedar woodduck for his birthday. That should be sweet.

Chase's GE has a tan cork body, basswood head, oak keel, and painted in Jansen's acrylics. Any constructive critisism is welcome because I'm still new at carving. It's my 5th decoy and my first attempt at raised primaries. I just hope he likes it:)

5 decoys...looks a lot more accomplished than that ....great job you son will be very lucky to hunt over that beautiful decoy...Dave

Since you asked for critisism....here 'tis....you spelled that word wrong....criticism. ;)

Nice job. I'd be proud to drop shot on that. Give your son a few years and he will really understand what a great and thoughtful Dad he truly has.

I can't speak for Paul, but I was very serious in all my comments...I wasn't joking around...

Just kidding ;)

Great job, now that you have set a benchmark, all the rest of the decoys you carve will go sooooo fast.

Very nice Dave,

Looks like you nailed the head/bill and it is in good proportion to the body. I like the side pockets. Nice looking decoy.

That GE looks like he ready for some serious hunting. Excellent job, be proud of that one and start on the next........decoy that is, don't want to tell you how many kids to have. dc

He'll love it. You made it, that's all he'll care about. That and kids love black and white decoys (at least mine do!).

Very good looking block!

Thanks guys for the kind words. It's great motivation.

And Lou, your criticism is always welcomed:) I did take a few tips from you barrow's GE tutorial on your website - excellent stuff by the way.

The pattern was by Pat Godin - probably why the head is proportional to the body, hehehe.

My next 3 GE's will be from Willy's pattern. Then I'll have to learn how to paint at least one hen...that'll be fun! The black and white divers are more my style.

Let the chips fly!!!

Glad to be of help...and critique. ;) If you want, I have patterns of our Standard GE I could email to you if interested. I carved and painted one for our first Flats Rig for the club. Since I take the E. Allen GE (original carved by Keith Mueller-couldn't ask for much better), cut it up into pieces and trace it out (I refer to that as my "original tracing") and then use that pattern for my carving.....referring to it as a "Near Allen". ;)
Let me know if you're interested.

Lou,

I'd love to carve a Tisch GE! My email is on my profile. You know, variety is the spice in a decoy rig.

BTW, Pauly has just about talked me into painting with FME's this summer. It has to be outside because my wife won't allow oil paints in the house:) Those paints are tough as nails and flat, flat, flat... His woodducks look awesome in FME.
