Well this post has two parts, first i will second the nice words about Mark Rongers he is a very nice guy and will do anything for his costomers, trust me i was a pain in the ass whenn i ordered my huff and he still took care of me. Also about the hull flex it bothers the heck out of me now my question is to the many people that know alot more about boats than me,just to clear up what i mean when you plane out, the hull right in the midddle of the cockpit sucks up atleast 3" and when you turn it sometimes goes up and down kinda like a oil can effect and i was just wondering how this will affect the fiberglass in the long run if at all,and what kind of precautions i should take while running it,thanks in advance for any advise.

That ain't the point, he shouldn't have to "fix" a new boat.

Hey, Mark may be the nicest man on earth, and his boats MAY be right on, but I've worked and played on big water all my life, in all kinds of boats, in all kinds of weather, and I wouldn't consider that acceptable.

Glassed in ribs may do more harm than good. If you put a stiff spot in a flexing hull you will concentrate the forces causing stress and possibly failure.

I'm with you George. Even if the 3" is exaggerated by 3X this is a serious issue in my opinion.

I knew the response I would get. However altering the boat to your requirements yourself may still be the best alternative. Just throwing that out there. There are many ways to add ribs and/or more strength to the hull, one or more may indeed be acceptable.

Was the design intended to hit a chop at speed? Can a boat of that construction be expected to with stand such use?

This will be my last post on this as I tire quickly of arguments.

Brian,
It's hard to determine as I don't know what Mark's design & use parameters are.

Couple thoughts.
1. On our Brant II & IIX, I want the hull to flex and it's strength is in the flex. We've beat the stuffings out of those boats on purpose and never had a concern. I would not stiffen our Brant IIX an more than it is. The hull is laid up with polyester resin and one layer of 2 oz. CSM and one layer of Knytex 1708 and squeegeed.

2. Our South Bay Scooter (Barnegat Style) has a stiffer hull, not only because the layup is a bit heavier (3 oz. CSM & 1708) but we also have a secondary floor that we install and foam underneath it for warmth and to reduce the flex for better running and strenth.

3. If you are going to strengthen the hull, I would NOT install a rib for many of the reasons already stated. What I would do is ADD (after grinding) a layer of 1708 and squeegee that down. If need be...put a layer of CSM under that and squeegee the 1708 down into that.

Holler with questions.

I too agree, do not just do ribs, I would strongly recommend if the floor is accessable getting some foam core, We use divinicel and use a layer of 2oz csm under and a layer of 1.5oz over and consider it done. This will make it sturdy enough yet allow it to flex as needed. I would use 1/4" divinicel and get it already scored that way it will conture to the shape of the hull. We use this currently in the floors of all our boats and they are strong enought that we can suspend the boat and jump up and down on the floor and it doesnt flex more than 1/2".

Flexing is normal but to much flex will create cracks and breaks in a weak spot if they exist.

Lets be careful with the "NEW BOAT" statement. What's getting lost in all of this is that Steve had issues with a boat he purchased USED from someone other than the manufacturer. His issue should have been addressed with the seller.... mebbe he (the seller) abused it.

As I see it, Mark tried to help Steve out on a boat he didn't sell him. If he'd bought it new, I guarantee Mark would've replaced it.

Lots of us who know Mark were offended by the original post aimed at ...........what???????....and over..... what???????

Had the buyer who purchased the new boat directly from MLB even had a problem? All I've been hearing for months is what a great boat he was purchasing / is purchasing / purchased / needed to get shipped /shipped 2000 miles in the back of a truck, etc.

Sheesh! Take the thing out and hunt and enjoy it. If it had been damaged in transit he'd probably be carping about all you guys who gave him advice on how to ship it.

I'd say it's logical to assume that if you decide to buy a boat thinking it's the ONE you want w/o ever checking it out in person, it might or might not be what fits the bill. But to all of a sudden go "fishing" for something that casts aspersions on a guy who many of us have the utmost respect for isn't right.

Just to update my original post i spoke to mark and explained the problem and just as i expected he took care of the problem and i am still a satisfied MLB customer.

Not going to find too many business owners that would do that. That's a stand up guy right there.

Always enjoyed talking to Mark at the Tuckerton show.
