Classic BBSB motor?

I picked a classic bbsb and need to get a small gas motor for it. I have a 35 lb electric but my battery is shot. How do you think the little trolling motor will push the boat? I dont know if its even worth getting a new battery or just save my money and wait for a gas motor. It is only rated for a 3hp gas motor so I will never break any speed records.

Tim, I found a 1960 Johnson 3hp on craigslist for $200. Starts every time, even in the cold. I don't go fast (its on a Zack Taylor Wigeon) but I'm ok with that! You can't kill those old motors, and I like the looks of them too.

I just saw one that is reasonable. It isn't running correctly. I am debating on it but I don't know how available parts are.

Tim, I work with a guy who collects and refurbishes little outboards like that. If you like I can see if he has anything avail? I have no idea what he typically asks for them.

Go for it! There are lots of parts available, they made them from 1952 thru 1967, Sierra makes ignition and carb kits. There is a website dedicated to the old johnsonrude 3's including repair and tuneup. I have 5 of them including a folding Ducktwin which is my main duckboat motor. Great weedless design.

Tim,
Look on Craigslist. There is a 7 hp in Prospect.

See if you can borrow a little larger motor to test on it before you drop the money on a 3 hp.

I ran a 7 hp that was still pretty lightweight.

I have a 9.5. It's only rated for a 3. With no coastguard plates I don't know how that would work as far as a fine. The specs on the D Warren say its rated for a 10hp.

I also have a classic bbsb and running a 2 stroke15 on it.I did redo the transom on if because i didn't like the original set up.

All you guys running or looking for weedless OMCs, make sure you check/ maintain those gearboxes. They are really wonderful in the weeds BUT parts are really expensive for those. Just Sayin! I have several and they are great little motors. There is a newer 4hp on my avitar pic.

I had a mint condition vintage 3hp Litetwin a few years ago that I ended up selling. I'm kind of regretting it, it was such a sweet little motor that started first pull after being hidden away in a garage for 20+ years. Well worth it if you can get ahold of one in good condition!

Theres a 3hp Johnson Ducktwin FOLDING for sale on Craigslist in Detroit. It's pretty cool! I'm in a 12 step program for old engine collecting, or I'd jump on it! I do have a 68' 3hp Johnson. Neat little engine.

Used a 3hp evinrude for 10-12 years. Finally found a real speedster a 5hp. Can't beat the realiability of those motors. Rebuilt a Jersey boat and found a 9.9, fast enough. Rebuilt a Southbay and upgraded again. This year another speedster up grade, a 15hp I bought from my nephew.
Keep it simple, small motors are fun.

I have a 1966 folding Ducktwin that I run on a 15'4" Gheenoe to hunt at my duck club. Great little motor and easy to pack away into a tote box for transport.
Some warn about the fragility of the folders but if you use common sense and don't try stump jumping they're fine. Carry spare shear pins and pliers if there is hard stuff around.

Tim,
Did you bolt the motorboard on or are you using screws?
Let me know if you want to hunt at all over Christmas break. The rivers are all too high right now.
