Coal is growing up---

faster than a weed or so the old saying goes. He is now 3 1/2 months old and is definitely showing the signs of being a gangly teenager. I sure enjoy this newcomer to our home. In the wee hours of the early morning, he likes being on my lap. Then in the evening he ususally spends another hour or so on my lap prior to going to bed.

I do love watching him grow up and then contemplating what sort of a duck dog will he be by next year. Of course I need to factor in some what ifs---

Good morning, Tom. Thanks for what you had to say about Coal. It has been fun for me to see the mental changes in him along with being able to document his growth in pictures. I, too, like that time in a dog's life when they begin filling out and start giving you a better idea at how they will look. Sometimes one will stumble across subtle changes that will bring a smile to your face. That just happened within the past 3 or 4 days now.

Our two adult dogs in our home are Casa (Bev's dog) and Belize (my dog), always go to the door when they need to go to the bathroom. Yesterday marked a major change in Coal, as he now is very comfortable in going to the door and sitting, just like our dogs, when he needs to go outside to the bathroom. We do heap on the praise and will reward him with a treat or two when he goes to the bathroom outside. The treats are maybe one or two kibbles of his dog food that he eats every day. Of course they are small but very effective in the results given back to us.

Yesterday, 11-9-21, Coal was ready to have some fun in our courtyard when I tossed his favorite ball. We played for a good 5 minutes.

In this picture, he showed me all I needed to know. It was like him saying, "Hey, I am tired and just want to rest a bit." I observed him for a short while and made the decision to go back
into the house. I walked over to him, then reached into my pocket and instantly he was standing, wagging his tail. He knew I had a treat. So all I wanted him to do then was this. I told him to sit
and he did. He was duly rewarded.

Hi Carl. I hope your list of places to go duck hunting in Florida is growing and that you have found success.

As far as Coal being introduced to water is concerned, yes he has. He walked over to the pond about 3 or 4 days ago when I was working with him on leash. The first thing he did was take a drink and then he decided to walk into the pond and there he stood. I was thinking that it probably felt good because it was 84F. Later this coming spring I will take him to the Rio Grande and see how he handles things with Sonora as his teacher. She knows how to have fun in the river.

I can see the twinkle in his eye of being a little devil. Aren't they fun? I am sure he will be a great companion.
 
Good morning Brad. When you talked about that twinkle in his eye, I know exactly what you are referring to. I was telling a good friend of mine that if all goes well with Coal's training, how much I am looking forward to that day in 2022 when I can take him on his first duck hunt. He's 15 weeks old and growing well. Just yesterday we went out to do some walking on leash and he handled it well. I think Coal has heard the word, heel, to the point where he knows it is important. Sometimes pups can really amaze you and he seems to be one of them.

In the past couple of weeks he has learned what, stay, means. Already he has mastered, sit, which has really pleased me. For his age, I am super pleased with his progress. I can hardly wait for the day that I take him along with Sonora, our black female. She is a great retriever and knows how to teach. Brad, yes indeed, they sure are fun!

This was the first time that I had taken Belize out with Sonora. This black female is a great teacher and showed my yellow house dog just what retrieving was all about.
