I am building a ply-on-frame BBSB-ish boat. All frames & transom are complete. Next step is attaching the frames together with the pieces that will become the cockpit sides/coaming. As it stands now, the coaming will be 2 1/4" high. Is that enough for a very low sneak boat?
I was planning on a slight deviation from the plans and making a little higher coaming on the sides. The deck curves from the centerline down to the gunwales. Instead of cutting the fore and aft coamings to follow the lines of the deck, I was thinking to keep those fore and aft coamings straight as the deck falls to each side. The side coamings would then join the fore and aft coamings at 4" or so from the deck. The fore and aft coamings would be 1.5" or so at center. Does this make sense?
Would that plan make my coaming too high? This is obviously a safety issue since the coaming's entire purpose is to provide a little more freeboard. But I don't know if 2" of extra freeboard would make that much difference from a safety standpoint anyway. Then there's the whole issue of height & mucking about with the boat's good lines from the concealment perspective . . . Most of my hunting will be in rocky, shallow rivers with riffles here and there, though I may have a go at some inshore pockets around big water where I may encounter some chop.
Here's a link to the design if you want to take a look & see the lines of the deck: http://spirainternational.com/hp_mars.html
I would really appreciate some opinions here! Y'all are FAR more knowledgeable than I am! This is my first build . . .
