Columbia River Black Jack!

It was a 0315 wake up for myself and and my two neighbors, Tim and Dave, so that we could make the river in time for a proper set up. Our intention was to hit the puddlers today, but being Wednesday, there was only one other boat of hunters in our area of the river. After the first hour of shooting light, and zero pressure to keep the birds moving, it was very evident that we needed to change our game plan.
Tim had happened to notice a couple of rafts of divers working along the shore line just a few hundred yards from our puddler hole. Luckily he had prepared for the possibly of hunting divers and had put a dozen Bluebill deeks into the boat. After a quick relocation we were into steady all day action that netted us a day of 20 Bluebills and one Drake Mallard to finish out our daily limit.

That one is one pretty mess of bluebills. Except for that greenheaded sissy duck messing up the pic. :)

I have the same plan for the lower Columbia on Sat. Bringing decoys for both puddlers and divers. Only hunted there once so don't really know what to expect. Hopefully we will have as a good of a day!

Looks like a great hunt. I'm impressed you did so well with only a dozen dekes. I think it is always a good plan to have a bag of diver decoys in the truck when heading down to the Lower Columbia after thanksgiving. Congrats.

It looks like we are going to make another run down tho the river tomorrow morning. We all have to work this weekend and tomorrow will make it our last day of this season. I'll post another update when we return.

Well best of luck to you. I'm heading down on Sat. to end my season as well. I've done a little scaup hunting down there in the past but I think I finally want to have a Greater on the wall. Amazing birds and a very tradition rich place to hunt them.
