I had the luxury of being in the company of good friends and Cpl. Ben Desilets over the Holiday. I can say while in the boat I believe he shined a light down on us. It was one of the best Opening weekends I have had hunting the great commonwealth of Kentucky in 31 years of being with friends duck hunting. A funny story about this Friday morning hunt was that all of us were tired and the weather was not really cooporating with us. Temperatures were 48 thru 65 degrees, winds were perfect with a 5 to 10 mph N-NW wind. The day was a bluebird sky. The normal area we should have saw plenty of birds were nothing but sobering. Steve McCullough, Brian Moneymaker, and Chris Hancock were nothing more then expecting a boat ride and colloboration of friends talking about life while one layed on his back in the boat. So we are off on the lake just driving when we noticed one sheltered bay that had some rough water with a little bit of slack. There might have been twenty birds sitting off one of the points in 8 feet of water. A decision was made to drop in throw the rig out. After the rig was in place I remember a silence when Steve ask, "Alright, who wants to go first"...Well I spoke-up and got the morning ice breaker. In ten minutes and 5 shots later, 4 bills in the boat. I believe Ben was correcting my shots that morning. Chris being next...Well...Steve shot his 4, then Brian got his four...Then Chris...Well...There is a new term in Kentucky...If you miss a shot in your face...You have "Hancocked It"....And with Ben at the front the line the birds did great coming down the lines that morning...

We respectively took 9, 7, 14, and 5 in the four days over Jarhead and Chris, well, he tried...LOL...Mixed bags of buffs, blues, and (1) hen old squaw...

Would be Happy to hunt with Jarhead everyday this season,
Kristan

Good hunt. Nice to see that Jarhead has avoided any friendly fire. Knowing your group, I was a bit afraid for him when I sent him your way. :>)

Just know that I truly remain your hero. I am the neophyte in the group when it comes to shooting and I have my moments. You forgot about the lost Gadwall. I take the most ribbing in the group. Most of you probably don't know that Kristan is about 4'7" and wears youth husky. He also shoots a youth 20 gauge. I must admit, he is deadly with it. I didn't get the best opportunities Saturday as I got back in the rig after all the onslaught was complete, but I did manage three that day.

It was great fun hunting over Jarhead. What a great tribute to a great Marine who died for our freedom. We can enjoy weekends like that thanks to him. I'll be sending him along his way to Virginia tomorrow.

I have some very good pics, but I am also posting challenged.

He was held close to the layout. I did skillet lick a few pancakes when a hen bill tried to land amongst them. :)
