Went to Books A Million today to get some Christmas presents and just had to flip through the magazines.
There was this neat old sneak box redone by you know who. Neat how you named the boat after your dad.
Can't remember if it was wooden boat or small boat journal, it was the December Issue. Again, nice work.

It's just a little photo with caption in the Relaunchings feature in WoodenBoat. They declined my offer of a full article. Not surprising in that - being a subscriber since the mid-80s - I've never seen them do a feature on a gunning boat. They have done stuff on Sneakboxes, Delaware Duckers, Great South Bay Scooters, et cetera - but always the racing yacht versions.

This is the photo they published:

And, of course, I posted voluminously on the TED SANFORD here and on my own site when I restored it 2 years ago:

I am hoping for some ice on Great South Bay this January....

All the best,

I guess will have to read about it (again) on your website.....not too hard of a task since i do enjoy reading your "how i did it" articles...

That's a damn shame. "Work" boats are way more interesting.

Zane~

The TED SANFORD is exceptionally heavy - I'm guessing over 200 pounds - maybe because of the heavy 'glass my Dad put on way back when. Nice and stable in heavy seas but no fun to lift. Most Scooters are significantly lighter. I have another Hallock Scooter here - in line for restoration later in 2016 - and I will weigh it when done. My next restoration will be an Olin Scooter - definitely much lighter. It, too, will get weighed during the process.

Scooters would move over mud very nicely EXCEPT for the ice runners on the bottom. My first grassboat had a perfectly smooth bottom and I could pole it over wet mud. But, any boat with strakes, runners or a skeg will not move over mud because those protuberances on the bottom are like vises - grabbing the bottom mercilessly.

All the best,

SJS

Good morning, Jeff~

WoodenBoat has always featured plenty of workboats - but have drawn the line a gunning boats. When they have referred to them - as when discussing the origins of Sneakboxes, Scooters and Duckers - they have invariably employed the phrase "blasting birds out of the sky".....never a good sign.....

All the best,

SJS
