Cultipacker

Any of you north Alabama guys have a cultipacker I could borrow or know somebody that does? I am about to broadcast seed and would like to get good soil contact. I have a disk and will lightly use it if I can't round up a cultipacker but from everything I read a cultipacker works best. Thanks.

Eric, if you cant get a cultipacker, you might want to drag with a harrow instead of discing. Most small seeds only need a 1/8 to a 1/4 inch of coverage. If too deep they wont germinate. Just an idea. You can use a piece of chain link fence as a harrow by the way

I agree with Edward, I definately wouldn't use the disc. I have heard of many food plot planters using the old piece of fence.

I have a set of disks that can be adjusted to run straight. I figured I could use the hydraulics and keep the penetration depth to less than an inch. That along with straight disks shouldn't bury the seeds too deep, I'd hope. As for dragging I've given that some thought but my concern is that since the field isn't "clean", meaning it has debris, dragging will result in sweeping the seeds into piles. If I could get a well timed rain I'd just leave it all topsewn. However our wet weather has broke and we are looking at much drier conditions.

Your inputs are definitely appreciated.

I use a homemade roller towed behind a 4 wheeler.Any kind of dragging tends to move the seed around too much for me.Unless your field is well fitted, you're better off to roll it.All you need is for the seed to have good contact
with the dirt.

The packer I use has gone to Atlanta. I'm worried it won't be back. Is that why you called me the weekend I was OOT?
