Cypress lumber for deks

There is an posting on Craigslist in my area that is selling 8/4" x 16' cypress lumber for $3.50 a bdft. Has anyone had experience carving decoys with cypess. All I've ever used was white cedar. Just wanted to get some opinions before I went a bought a few boards. Thanks!

I got a deal on cypress and use it for heads and keels and also a couple hollow decoys. Seems to be working great so far.Smells like puke when grinding it though.

Yep I've used cypress on quite a few decoys. My only problem with it is it is really heavy and tough sometimes. I prefer cedar or tupelo. To me cypress is too much like basswood. I wouldn't get it, but i carve with knives and not many power tools so i can't say how well it power carves. I'd have to be very desperate to pick up some cypress.

This is just what i have noticed. It will take a lot of abuse for gunnin birds though. Its much tougher than cedar or tupelo.
