Decking material

Has anyone used the composite deck material for flooring a boat. I'm trying to think of some kind of material other than vinyl or carpet covered wood.

Ed,

I have not used it but keep in mind the weight factor. 6.27 lbs per square foot of this compared to 1.4 lbs for 1/2 ply; 1.72lbs. for 5/8 ply; and 2.22 lbs for 3/4 ply. Can't imagine you would need anything more than 5/8 thick if even that. You would of course, have to add the weight for the carpet or vinyl.

(weights are average typical) I also did not check different choices (thickness) of available composite. I just know the strength to weight ratio is poor compared to wood or plywood.

One of my first boats (1974 vintage) had a true cedar plywood substrate under the vinyl. Made for a relatively lightweight flooring material.

Thanks Dave. That's the stuff I'm eyeing (although from the Lowes site and there is no weight called out). I see on the Menards site it's 21+lbs per 8' board Your probably right about weight. 9 boards across at 21lbs a board is over 200lbs. And then there is a casting deck. 5/8 ply is between 50 and 60 lbs for a 4'x8' sheet. I don't believe carpet and glue would add 100lbs.So it's most likely way to heavy for my application.

Fiberglass reinforced urehane boards. Isnt cheap but you can choose the density of material you want to use. Think Coosa, Penske, Michigan Composites and so on.
