Decoy blanks?

Gentlemen

I have 10 acres of trees and some are coming down this year. I have Sitka spruce, hemlock, a little alder maple and western cherry and litterally millions of board feet worth of Doug fir and Cottonwood.

I haven't decided how many of which trees are coming down yet, but I would like to know if any of the above species are suitable for carving decoys? Also, what are the general size of decoy blanks and what grain orientation is preferred?

I don't believe I will have enough to market, but I am certain I could get a few out to friends here and use many to develop my carving skills.

I'm also looking for something to do with this wood other than making firewood (burning maple and VG fig breaks my heart.)

Thanks
Ron
