hi there everyone i got a chance to get a good load of bass wood 4" thick and up to 12" wide is bass wood good for goldeneye bodies i know they use them for the heads thanks for the input
Rick,
Basswood is considered a good carving wood. It can fuzz a little when sanding but its still good. Its on the heavier side so If I was to use to for bodes and heads I would be sure to hollow it out really well. If its a good price and quality wood I would say you can't go wrong picking it up.
It will carve a little harder then cedar or pine. Are you carving with power tools or hand tools?
Rick,
My advice then is to be picky and if its its good wood and a fair price you should be happy carving it. It will fuzz a little because of the power tools but I doubt it will be unmanageable.
I hand carve so my basswood is set aside for head stock.
I would not order a load of wood from someone that does not know what carving wood looks like. A person might end up with a load of really expensive firewood.
Like I said I would not order a load of wood from someone that does not know what carving wood looks like. A person might end up with a load of really expensive firewood. Lumber mills are no exception. In fact I would learn what to look for before ordering because it sounds like you are new to all of this.
so what do i look for in a carving wood ,I have used ceadar before but that place has since closed down for the winter .This guy that has the bass wood has it all cut and piled nice and neat in a big room .so ill go and look to see what he has .
