Decoy Fun Day in Connecticut

Hi, all. I'm new here, this being my first post. Wanted to let people know that the Connecticut Waterfowlers Association is hosting a very informal "Decoy Fun Day" on August 30th, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. It will be held at the Bozrah Rod and Gun Club in Lebanon, CT. There will be free lunch and trap shooting, in addition to a "fun" decoy competition. This is going to be strictly a hunting decoy contest, with no preference shown to new or used birds. All carvers entering a bird will receive a voting card. The bird with the most votes wins "Best in Pond". We're not sure where this get togther is headed but hope to make it an annual, and growing event. Welcome to the DBHP. I saw the flier at the regs meeting. My son said he was excited to go and I put it on the calendar which means we should be able to make it. Sounds like a fun event.

Greetings to the site. I too got my flier at the CT DEP Waterfowl meeting. It does sound like a fun event and I hope to drop in. Even more, I hope it continues to grow to a venue similar to NH's Ducker Day. Seeing the boats and few tables of art and "stuff" is fun as are the demonstrations and most of all getting to see friends attracted by all the above. If all goes well I my even get the courage to buy into the voting, as I'm messing with a 4 bird buffy rig. Hopefully at least one of them is worth floating.

hey rich is there something that paul can send through his email for me for time and maybe directions to this event. ive been dying to co to a "competition" with my birds since the decoy show in hartford a few years back.

Ed the club is in Bozra CT just past Lebanon on Route 2 South East of Hartford. I can get the street address if you decide to come. The event sheet said Sunday the 30 of Aug. I am going to bring my Kara Hummer and a few decoys. Including my first bird. Should be a great afternoon. Bring your fox.

Judged in pond. New or used birds judged evenly.
Bring some from your rig

Free lunch
Hot dogs, hamburgers and soft drinks

Free Trap shooting
Bring shotgun and boxes of shells

The Entry fee is $5.00 for the first bird and $1.00 for each additional decoy. All money will be returned as prizes, $50/$30/$20 for the “Best in Pond”. Those carvers entering the competition will do judging. An entry gives you a scorecard. The decoy with the most carvers’ votes wins. Sponsored by CWA and BRG.

I am planing on going with my son. Also maybe some of the guys I hunt with. Should be a good time, looking forward to talking decoys and duck hunting. Thanks Pete

rich or anyone from that area know of a decent/ cheap hotel room near or within ten mins of the gun club. me and a buddy are looking to head down and go out on the town after the competition with one of his love interests and twin her sister.

info on any bars and hopping places in the vicinity would also be appreciated.

I would do a search for hotels in the Norwich area which is just outside of Bozrah. Bozrah is a very small town and there is not much right in it but I have been to the fish and game club there and they are a good bunch of guys.
As for the night life the biggest venue I know of in that area are Foxwoods and Mohegan Casino's - Both offer more than gambling so check out their website's and you may come up with something - not a cheap night but plenty to see and do - either one is about 10-15 minutes from Norwich.
 
I'll second the Mohegan Sun, but as for lodging, try Tripadvisor.com, and/or orbitz.com. Tripadviser has a lot of user reviews and will tell you just how it is. I'm sure a night at the Sun ain't cheap, but at least you don't have to worry about driving afterwards. And it's a holiday weekend, so you might have to book 2 or 3 nights.

my buddies dad found a room for us at the best western regent inn in mansfield for $92. its about a half hour away i guess. its the cheapest we could find without sleeping in a box. it should be good. we're taking his car instead of the truck to save on gas. im hoping to bring a couple - three birds for the competition and im bringing two guns for the shoot.

how manys rounds of trap are we shooting or is this just a fun shoot?

Glad you found a room. Mansfield is not too far. You're welcome to shoot as many rounds of trap as you want. Again, just hoping to make it a fun day for everyone.
 
ED - I live in Mansfield but I am working Nights that weekend. If you need any info on the Mansfield area shoot me a pm and I'll give you my cell phone number.
