what does everybody use for their keels is oak all right got some given to me so my deks im carving are going to be 14-15 long so what size of keel should i make width and length and if anyones has a few pics that would be great thanks

Whatever you have is fine, I use oak all the time. I prefer 5/4 stock the same length as the bottom of the decoy or just slightly shorter.

Not to change the subject, and I'm truly not trying to be an ass here, but I gotta ask, wtf is the deal with the blank reply after all your posts? I was guessing you were trying to pad your post count so you could put something in the classifieds but you oughta be past that point by now.

Hi Rick. I've used painted pine that is 3/4" think, varnished mahogany that is anywhere from 3/4" thick to 1" thick. Somewhere I have some deeks with scraps of maple as keels, damn near anything will work.
