Decoy Painting

I have a question about decoy painting. I had 3 dozen foam decoys passed down to me recently. They have been sitting for several years and need to be painted. The heads are in good shape I just need to paint the bodies. There are 2 dozen black ducks and one dozen pintails. Is there a particular brand and shade of paint that I should use for each one.

Jeff~

If you want to use acrylic/latex paints, you can see my Tutorials at:

Although the post is for cork birds, the same paints will work for plastics. A light sanding with ~100-grit sandpaper before painting is best.

BTW: I will be posting new Mallard and Black Duck tutorials over the next couple of weeks - and will present them here at duckboats.net.

Oil paints are tougher - but also require solvents other than water. I believe Parker's still sells kits.

Hope this helps,

What kind of foam is it? Are they like the old Herters', EPS foam?
If so, might want to burlap them. Makes them a lot tougher.

As far as paints, like Steve suggested, give them a quick sanding to remove any flaky paint. Then give them a coat of primer.
I use both FME paints from Lou at Lock, Stock & Barrel as well as paint samples from Home Depot, as also suggested by Steve. FME is incredible paint, I have partial cans that I bought back in 1999 that are still good. Home Depot is close & convenient and they will custom mix anything.
