I am looking for ideas how to store decoys on the gunnels of john boat. I am thinking of building some kind of rack on each side to hold decoys. Any ideas and/or pictures would be greatly appreciated
David, although a great idea, have you had any issues with ice or other crap building up on the bags and dekes while on the road? Seems like they could weigh a ton each or be filthy by the time you got to the launch.
I never had any issues with that set up. They are mesh and don't absorb water, so they don't get heavy. No set up is perfect. The saddle baggs work great if you use up to 4 lines and keep the decoys on.
Only issue i had was windy day on a lond drive back to maryland from canada. the outside part would flip into the boat. The decoys didn't spill out and nothing happened. After that, i ran a dock line down the side of the boat to keep them secure just to be safe. I had trailed many times the 90 miles or so to the place i normally hunt with out this issues with out it secured down.
here is a pic from the outside
I would do bags over shelves. Shelves will be heavier and are semi permanent. The bags are very light and could be folded up and stored in the bow or on the decoy shelves of the boat completely out of the way. Plus, if i was puddle duck hunting and didn't need the divers, i would just take the bags off and leave them home.
You can also get bags done that are just on the inside. I think the plastic mesh is very durable, and much lighter than canvas.
there are lots of ways to store decoys, each with advantages and disadvatages

Thank you but this would not work where we hunt. We run through alot of cattails and brush and these would get knocked off. What I am looking for is somway to attach somthing to gunnels and the decoys would set inside.
There is an ad in the DU magazines for a system you are talking about. I don't have a magazine at work and I didn't see it on their website.
It is plastic contruction and is in the interior of the boat. It looks to be for plastic decoys with keels so blocks like herters or handmade don't look like they would work with the system but that is just from a quick look at the ad....from what I remember.
