This is it.

First snow storm of the season and there is no way I can get out of work today or tomorrow without making up a great big lie. I haven't missed a first snowstorm hunt in years, this is not good. I do have the last days of the season blocked so I won't be missing those days. Looks like it might even freeze by then which is a great thing.

Good luck, I hope you can get into some ducks the next time you head out.
I can't tell you how glad I am we missed out on the snow here. Last winter was so long and cold that I can go a while before we get snow.

We won't have snow and real cold, its supposed to be 10 to 20 degrees below normal here starting Wednesday.
While lows in the mid 30's and highs in the 50's aren't considered winter in most places, for coastal Alabama, those are more like December/January temps than mid-November.

Good news. My morning responsibilities have disappeared. I can go hunting in the morning. Now if my truck can make it down and back up the ramp. This is the difficult question as what is coming down now is ice, not snow. Last time I tried the ramp thing I had brand new tires and had some trouble. May not be too good tomorrow either. May have to bring some ice melt along.

Mark,

I know that is mental torture knowing you should be hunting. But at least you have two things going for you. One your in a heated vehicle with no mosquitos and two your not stuck in a Texas Rice Field mud pit wondering where you took your last step to find you hip waders that were sucked off you several steps ago. Only because you were not really worried about your boot but swatting at Turkey size mosquitos that were drinking 100% deet of your skin. :) When you get tired of the cold weather and snow please, please send it my way....

Kristan

Kristan that hot Texas weather should be perfect for the Cinammon Teal.....have you seen them this season?....
I'm trying to put together a Chestnut Bellied Scaled Quail hunt in Texas late this winter.....few Cinnamon's to go with the would make a heck of a "mixed double" photo.....

The lease this year has not had water. The farmer is just now taking out the second cut rice. The only birds we have taken are pintails which are dry feeding the fresh cut fields with the specks.

We had the whole turkey sizes mosquito thing the first two weeks of the season. That is so yesterday.....

I do love hunting in the snow and cold. Make no mistake about it. This morning I am thinking I won't be going. Too much freezing rain has fallen and I am certain I won't be getting up and down the ramp. If I could go after sun up for a could hours I would feel better. I think my old age common sense is making a ruling here and staying home. I will have the rest of the week when it is going to drop below zero. Yep, you heard the right, below zero.

Mark - I was out in the slop and it was terrible. The freezing rain mad navigating the lake impossible, so we set up on a close sheltered point, only I get downwinded after shooting light started.

We saw medium numbers of birds, and only one flock of buffleheads actually decoyed.

Also, I sent you a message.
