Rick,

I have had the opportunity to hunt out of several Devlin boats, Snow Goose, Black Brant 2 and 3, Poleboat. In addition I have been seen several in operation, Scaup 16, Cackler, Mallard, Blue Bill, Broadbill, and Black Brant 1. I have built a Black Brant 3 and a Poleboat. In my mind, for the hunting I do, from marshes along the Mississippi to open water of Green Bay, I think the Black Brant 3 is the best of the bunch with the Snow Goose a close second. The BB3 is extremely stable, low profile, and can handle waves up to 4 ft. (not that I want to do 'that' again). Put a dodger on the front of the cockpit if you want. I currently have a 35 hp on mine but have seen motors of 25 hp push them along with one person. Personally I would not go less than a 30 hp.

I'll second the opinion on the Black Brants. I have a BBII and a BBIII. The BBII has a 35hp on it and the BBIII has a 25hp. With the shallower draft and planning hull design of the BBIII it moves very well with a 25hp.
The attached photos are of both boats. The BBIII is the boat that has been grassed.

Here is a link to more photos of the BBIII during the final stages of completion.

I hope this helps

John,

What color and brand of paint did you use on your boats? I really like how they blend into the surroundings with both sand and grass.

Nice post John, I have a Scaup 16 that I've been wanting to put a dodger on, I think you just made my decision for me. Your boat looks great.

Ed,

I use Pettit #3303 Dull Dead Grass. Holds up great and cover a lot of area per quart.

Rick,

From memory I think the hull panels are 3/8ths, floor is 1/2, transom is doubled 3/4. Marine ply usually comes in mm though. Sam Devlin used to have a materials list for his designs on his web page but I haven't seen it lately. You should get a complete materials list when you order the plans. Call or email Sam, he has always been very accessible.

Rick, I built a modified BB3 this past summer and I ended up using 6 sheets of 3/8" (9mm), 1 of 1/2" (12mm), and 1 of 3/4" (18mm) along with about 9 gallons of epoxy. 4 of the 3/8" sheets will be scarfed together to make 16 foot panels, the other 2 will become the decking. If you are concerned about weight you could probably use 1/4" for the decking but with the 3/8" this boat is solid as a rock. Total material cost was roughly $1800. You will love this boat!

I wanted to try to build one in my down time in the winter, but ill be redoing the bathroom at my wife's request, somehow I think the boat build would be more fun.
