difference between a semi v and a deep v?

or what ever other kinds of v hulls there are, what makes it one or the other? what would an old starcraft aluminum boat be? thanks, mike.
 
Depends on how much deadrise there is (how much "V" there is). I have no idea what that particular boat has, but a lot of them are relatively flat bottomed at the stern and have a V forward to try and have the best of both worlds (a "V" to cut waves and flat in the rear for speed on plane). Take a look at it, does it have a V in the rear?

These are semi-V hulls. Think of them as slightly pointy john boats.

The old Starcrafts I've seen have pretty flat bottoms. Not necessarily a bad thing. the flatter the bottom the less HP needed to get/stay on plane. They'll pound more in a sea/chop but everything is a compromise.

Strictly speaking a semi V has a flat or really close to flat bottom at the transom. A deep V will still have a pronounced V at the transom.

What you describe is a semi V. the picture below is a stern view of a Starcraft hull that would be classed as a deep V

i guess i do have a true v. i was thinking it had to have a large amount of v in the stern, but it is about like the pic huntindave posted. thanks for putting my pic up scott, i couldnt find it, and thanks for the info, once again.
