Distance with outboard

I can vouch for the 10% rule, my 25 Evinrude will burn 2 1/2 gallon per hour, I did learn that the hard way but a walk was a good workout. Just move the decimal point on the horsepower to get gal/hr. at W.O.T.. Obviously things change with 4 strokes and fuel injection. I will carry a 1 gallon extra if there is question, don't need the walk and sometimes that is not even an option.

Have made many runs on the Ohio River at that distance and slightly further on run and gun days with a 6 gallon tank with reserve left in the main tank. The caveat is that I had a small one gallon tank in reserve. You can basically assume with an outboard that you will need 10% of the hp of the engine in gallons per hour. The BBSB moved about 15-18 mph fully loaded. It also has a displacement hull. Never had a problem getting back without gas. Extra will not hurt.

Kristan

This is why I like my 12 gallon tank and oil injected motor.

Chris is young enough to go on these adventures and more power to you. Just remember no duck is worth it. Not even a money band. Try it now Chris while the weather is still cooperating but I would be hesitant to try in late December or January.

I'd rather drive an extra 30 miles in a car for a 5 minutes boat ride. Don't get me wrong, boat rides are fun but not in 23 mph winds and 3-4 footers. Ugly day!! I realize that you will be in the canal but weather can be tricky. Save the pleasure rides for the summer and find a ramp nearby and hunt safer and smarter.

weather and tides are a major factor. last year, hunting the fingerlakes, we had 3-4 footers and a 10 mile run each way.
going out wasnt bad with them but getting back into them was tough. we were planning on doing the same the next day so
to be safe i filled the tank again, we used 9 gallons of fuel. i was glad i decided to fill up b/c its only a 12 gal tank. my two
cents is carry twice the fuel you think you need.

Always need more fuel, 350 gals + two 50 gal drums

I am stock piling 3 drums for after my twins are born. I really want to run the little boat from New Orleans to Key West. It has 400 gallons but it always nice to have a considerable safety margin.

Does anyone have a rough idea of how far a 15hp evinrude and go on 3gal of fuel and about half throtle. I know its a wide open question and there are a lot of factors that come into play. I am wanting to try a new spot that I can only get to at high tide and its a 9 mile run each way. Just wondering if I would have any isues with a full 3gal tank running at about 1/2 to 3/4 throtle. What kinda distance to you guys run and what are your thoughts on say 20miles round trip on 3gal. Thanks

I could always take a 1gal gas can with me if needed

I read through this thread and geeze, it is a 9 mile trip - in NJ. Won't you pass something like 5 Wawas in the 9 mile trip? Slap an extra 5er on the bow and see if you need it. Pussification of the DHBP.

Good memories of Wawas as a kid making roadtrips to Jersey :).

P.S. if you do the trip Monday when Sandy is coming ashore wear a lifejacket and put your cell in a ziplock.

Gotta have a wawa

I used to run 9 miles one way in my 1440 with the 18hp Nissan.
Never came close to running out of fuel with a 6 gallon tank but I'm not sure a 3 gallon tank would have made it either.

WaWa sucks now. Their subs were the first thing that I would crave crossing the Delaware Memorial bridge into Jersey coming home from school in Georgia. But that was back when the subs were made to order with the meat being cut fresh. Now it is all pre-cut and you can taste the difference.

I was running w a 3 gallon tank in the back of my Bbsb ,this year I went w a 6 up under the front .less filling up no worries ab running out,and a Lil extra weight to keep the front down.I also but some decoy boards on the front and haul them up there.

Had a great Gobbler today for lunch! But mine was from a local deli with fresh cooked turkey and not sliced cold cuts.. That is a fantastic sandwich.

I used to live and work near Chadds Ford PA. These posts about Wawa and turkey sandwiches remind me of the awesome Turkey Hoagies that the deli at Genuardi's put together. Definitely worth a detour Wish they were near my current hunting grounds!
