Does anybody duckhunt Montana?

I'm moving to Billings this summer. Closer to Alaska and further from NY!
I can't wait.

Doug Bowman is on this site and he lives up there. I know he loves to hunt ducks. Good luck.

One of my buddies up here is from MT. His wife's family has a large wheat operation up near Chester. The river and large reservior create a duck and goose hunting wonderland most years. And when they get bored with waterfowl they go after huns and pheasants. Sounds horrible.

When you get there start looking for warm water springs in back sloughs along the rivers. These don't ice up and will have birds all season. Most are on private land, but there are some spots that have public access through recreation sites.

Also get into the land owner block management system and start checking out the available private land hunting. From what I was told they make a distinction between big game and small game hunting in that system. That may not be correct.

I hear YES. But I also have heard don't go there unless you have a job that you can live on lined up in advance. Cost of living is only a little less than here on the East Coast

Watch out for the rattlesnakes

I hear that it doesn't get too cold as long as you don't mind the occasional 40 below

You need to buy or build a McKenzie drift boat, but make sure that you bring your beer/booze with you from Billings when you go to fish the Bighorn....they don't sell it on the reservation.

I'm envious. I'll be passing through Billings on 9/7 & 9/15 to go fishing.

Yes, the system is good. The land owner specifies the species available and the dates, if I remember right, but it is all in the book as far as what is OK when.

My wife got a great job. I'm all set. I'll let you all know how it is around November. Good place to raise kids anyway.

Hi Bill

I moved up here in 2011 from NJ and I LOVE IT!!!!

Im 14 miles from Fort Peck reservoir, 1 mile from the Milk River and 10 Miles from the Missouri river.
Im in Nashua , east of Glasgow

I lived in Livingston, Mt. for three years. Plenty of ducks to be found and geese too. Pm if you need or would like to discuss further.
My neighbor , Don, across the street there in Livingston has now passed but was a good guy with a great sense of humor and once told a good tale on himself of sneaking along the Yellowstone River and blasting a group of ducks. Nothing happened Don told me... until a man yelled to him to him from his blind and said "give'em the other barrel".
Funny I'm 41 but still imagine this playing out in black and white. Wooden Blocks no doubt.
