Does anyone have a good American Lab breeder

I am hoping for close, I am in MD. To me VA or DE are close enough but a half days drive is OK.
I just lost my 12 year old Chocolate and my 14 year old Black has cancer and the writing is on the wall there.
I am guessing I will want a pup for this spring once the empty house is too much.
What I want is an American not a British Labrador male, color doesnt really matter. All field or hunting lines with good hips elbow eyes ect on both sides of the breeding. I want a higher energy grown dog who is tall and around 90 to 100lbs.
Is anyone still breeding labs like that? Or do I need to try to convince my wife that Chessies are cute ect...All I am seeing are English
Thanks

Lawrence,

I'd go to the HRC website and find clubs in your area. Good way to be able to attend some training days and evaluate field dogs first hand as well as meet the people who own and have opinions on those breeding them.

There ain't nothing like a big dog. My male runs 105lbs of muscle. Unforunately, he came from MT. Good luck. Chris

Lawrence,

Sorry to hear about your two dogs. That is a lot to take in a short time.
I agree with MLBob if you dont know someone already you will find a good batch of dogs at most field days where a club is putting on an event.
I would look hard at the people who are running dogs that have the look and size you like.

But to me personality and trainability are very high on the list. I would try to find a breeder who is doing analysis on the puppies trainability. It has been used for a long time with the guide dog program and works. The testing was talked about in the book by the Monks of New Skeet who train German Shepherds.
Knowing both parents and their personality, and then picking the pup that has the workability you want goes a long way to having a trained dog that meets your needs.
Also be looking for all the medical checks. Hips Eyes Ears and I am sure others.

Check in with George "Obi" Williams or Jeff Coats they are in your area and would be good sources of info.

If you have ducks my Gordy is looking to move out
cause its no good here for sure.

You can also check out the classifieds at www.retrievertraining.net. Ads are listed by state.

Diana Jagoda runs the facility and is a class act. Have had two of her dogs, both outstanding blacks, but she has an all chocolate breeding offered that was whelped August 27th due to go home mid October. According to website still has 2 males and 4 females left. She also has a started chocolate male available.
Good luck, and sorry to hear about your loss.

Vicki Trainor very good breeder right in MD great lines of Field Trial and Hunt Test dogs. Oakdale Retrievers

She has had a few FC/AFC dogs out of her lines

I got my lab from Paradise Kennels http://www.peachesandpups.com/ they are in Dover Delaware. They are on a big peach farm and the nicest folks.Going there to pick a pup was like stepping back in time.My dog is just what you described..tall,long legged and around 90 lbs with an extreme desire to retrieve. He was already retrieving at 8 weeks when we picked him up and I trained him myself and had him full blown hunting at 6 months and on geese too.His desire to retrieve is overwhelming and he really trained himself my only job was teaching him to hold back...He only knows one gear...HIGH. My first lab I trained never needed the E collar but after a few months it was evident that I needed one for this guy. These high desire dogs are alot to handle and really should be given alot of work.I found it almost impossible to house train him as he would try anything to get outside! He's much happier out there in his own kennel and so is the wife! My neighbor has a british type lab and is much stouter and calmer but he doesnt burn out there like my dog to get a bird plus he has that classic lab leap into the water that is awesome. The only time this dog sits still is when he's hunting its amazing.Even though I hunt alot during the season I just wish I was retired and could give this type of dog a real workout that they require its almost like having a Ferrarri and keeping it parked in the garage. But they have good dogs and their website is very informative and you can see the parents and find out when the litters will be ready..Good luck
Rob

Just checked DeeP Run Farm retrievers website. Best of my recollection, she and Jack were once married.
They look to have some nice pups too.

My yellow lab "jack" is out of Deep Run as well. His parents were Buddy and Cajun.

I love my dog! He is so calm and even tempered but has an awesome drive to hunt. I sent Jack back down to Deep Run for two months of training at 6 months. I gave them my puppy and got a dog without those teenage weeks in between. My next lab will have some pretty big paw prints to fill. They say everyone deserves one great dog in their life. I've had three so I hope this isn't it. I would buy from Deep Run again.
