Does this look like ringworm to you?

Jenny has been growing this condition for a month or so now. It is spreading on her muzzle and is showing up on both eyes and possibly one foot.

I know we butchered at least one moose in the garage that had ringworm larvae in the muscle tissue. Can it spread from dead things?

I think Jenny needs a good vet! Ringworm is a fungus so the parasites in the moose aren't the skin ringworm you are referring to.

I've had some bizarre stuff get hold of my dogs over the years. Aggie had a species of lung flukes that she picked up from eating crayfish when I had her steelhead fishing. It took MONTHS to figure that one out and she was coughing so bad we couldn't sleep at night.

I sent the picture to this new vet we have here now that only makes house calls. Cool idea - no clinic, no staff, low overhead. The dog teams love it because she doesn't mind working in their yards and her prices are not bad. She came up last week to have a look and make some slides, but is puzzled as to what it is. We've got her on 100 mg of cephalexin a day for two weeks right now.

After I posted I read a little more and there's not much of a chance its ringworm. I just thought the brain trust here might have seen it before.

Brian, that's "puppy warts" right? They are usually more inside the mouth though aren't they? I'll have to look that one up too.

The one thing that is comforting when you've got dog vet bills to pay is that they aren't horse vet bills to pay.

Looks like a secondary staph infection from an allergy. Cephalexin and pred would be my normal course. Allergy could be food, contact (plastic bowls), or enviromental inhaled allergins (pine pollen in the south). Keep us updated.

Brian

You might be on to something there Brian. We'll run the Ceph for two weeks and see. She's had ear infections in the past that we thought were allergy based and switched to dry food with no wheat in it with success. MAybe she just got her nose into something.

If I do find out, I'll let you guys know,

Mike

My dog had ring worm on his sides last winter. And it didn't look like that. I belong to another site called www.thebuckbarn.com there is a vet that gives free advise in the hunting dog section. You have to register to post on the site. Good luck.

Mike, my 4 yr old lab has what looks like the exact same thing. The meds clear it up and almost two months to the day it reapears. Starts under her chin and becomes huge swollen puss/blood looking pimples. Spreads to her back foot from scratching and then the front from licking. Vet says allergies that they can't pinpoint. Switched, food, bowls, bedding still comes back. Looks a mess. Maxine takes 2 500mg capsules twice a day, and yes it's Cephalexin.

INteresting, Jenny does have it on one front foot as well, and it is spreading. When you get a chance, could you tell me the kinds of dog foods you've tried that didn't help? Do you give her the Ceph tablets all the time now?

Helpful stuff Bill, thanks.

Mike

Mike, we have used Pro Plan,Eukanuba, Benniful and a few others. Right now she is on Purina HA which is their HypoAllergenic food. Costs a ton and it's not working either. Vet has sent out cultures and no one has been able to pin point it other than an allergy. She does take the pill everyday. The pills are a lot less expensive then the 109.00 dollar a shot that lasted a month. Max also has ear issues. Some times she shows bacteria and some times yeast, then nothing, then maybe in one ear. We love her but she's a science project for our vet.

Well thanks for the advice, and lets keep in touch about this. I'll talk to the vet here again next week. Do you mind if I forward your experience on to her? It might help her, might not, but its worth a try if you're OK with that.

Allergies with secondary infections. Frustrating in some dogs as you are finding out. Not a simple answer to that one!

DOES YOUR DOG EAT OUT OF PLASTIC OR METAL FOOD DISH, i HAVE A FRIENDS LAB THAT THE VET SAID SHE WAS ALLERGIC TO THE PLASTIC BOWLS, CHANGED THE DISH AND ALL WAS WELL, JUST MY .02, GOOD LUCK

I feed her out of a stainless steel dish that even hits the dishwasher every now and then. I was thinking the same thing, and we turfed her plastic dish a long time ago.

So Ira, I guess I should try to talk Mac out of wanting to be a pilot and get him thinking vet school? Oh well, it could be worse - she could be a horse.

Mike, My first lab (Yukon Jack) had an allergie when he was a pup on his feet to something in the grouse woods. We were all set to have some tests done and it went away never to return.???????????? He was clean for another 13 years. The best of luck on this one.

Mike....I'm thinking Bush Pilot/Vet that flies around and does the vet thing and guides for big game the rest of the time. It'd be great reality TV.

I like Royal Canin Duck and Potatoe or Eukanuba Fish and Potatoe (F/P) for my food allergy trials. Feed for at least 6 weeks with nothing else going into the dogs mouth (good luck). Another good product is Atopica (cyclosporin) for dogs that keep breaking through the antibiotic/steroid treatment. Like Ira said, no easy answer and every dog/allergy issue is different to some degree.

Good luck,
Brian
