Dog advise

My neighbors have a rescue mix breed that is almost a year old. Problem is the dog will bark at anything. Example it will see me in back yard and bark I'll go up to it to pet it and it shows signs of fear, ears back , back hair on edge, backing up. Then I'll pet it and it will calm down. Two minutes later same, barking etc. I'm thinking the dog is sight impaired. The dog was gotten as a pup so it was never abused?
Any suggestions? Dogs an idiot.
Thanks
Ken

is your neighbor looking for advice? not much you can do otherwise

bark collars do work - i had a setter that would not stop barking at night- the collar stopped it and if fact after a while i quit charging it - just having it on as enough

there are bark suppressors that work by producing a high pitch that dogs don't like (rather than the electronic collar type)

and i have seen them disguised as bird houses - you put it near the property line - and if the dog barks there - it teaches them not to

but all they have to do is back up some distance and keep barking

Thanks Rick. Nieghbor guy who babied the crap out their last dog [ dog had its own bedroom] now is saying " stupid dog" so I think they are not happy with the dogs temperament. Last dog was very calm and smart. the dogs look like twins but it ends there.

That sound a little like my idiot neighbor's young German Shepard. I think in that case it is a poorly socialized dog that is very insucure. That shepard comes into my and another neighbor's yards and will bark non-stop at our dogs and us.
I fear it will start a fight but it is more likely to get hit on the road like their last dog.

Even if it has vision problems it should be able to be a good citizen. It probably needs an obedience class just to get out and be exposed to new situations. Once is gets use to new stimuli it should calm down around the house. I'm just guessing from afar but it sounds like it gets wound up and scared by every noise it hears. Its the Don Knotts of dogs.

Bark collars do work and will make it peaceful for you. The owner might want to deal with it by visiting a trainer. A non barking freaked out dog is still annoying.

Does the dog get a reasonable amount of legitimate exercise? That's the the hardest thing to get an owner to do but is so often a magical cure for so many dog behavior issues. Dogs have varying levels of energy production but whatever that level is, if it's pent up the dog will misbehave.

Thanks Tim and Nick I don't think it gets lot of exercise, but i'm going with an insecure dog. That's what it reminds me off, I almost want to grab it and hold it to get it over that fear but it's their problem. Their first dog was a mixed that was extremely well behaved they finally put it down due to old age but it went six months to long, dog suffered due to the wife's emotions, so they waited until they found the identical look in another rescue but it's an idiot.
