Anyone have a home remedy for a dogs ear wash. I went I line but I just don't trust the info. Would like to know if anyone has a proven ear wash.
His ears keep getting infected and I keep them clean....Thanks John

My BLF had chronic ear infections and I tried everything.

The absolute best tip I ever received was to give her a Tbs of plain unflavored yogurt with her morning food.
I started this routine and she has never had another ear infection.

The recipe for a good ear cleaning solution can be forund here:

or just Google "purple stuff"

Good luck

I just use what my vet has. Some of the ingredients for the purple stuff are difficult to find.

Vinegar in the ear after swims is a good home remedy. It has worked on several dogs for me over the years.

John,

I personally have used the following which is the one you see on the net a lot. It works well for my one dog that gets ear infections constantly. If you can not find and ingredient then ask your pharmacy to order it in. Mine was happy to.
Also use witch Hazel it wont burn like alcohol can.

Good luck. I have a friend that used it in his own ears. ( I wont go that far )

16 oz. bottle isopropyl alcohol (or witch hazel)
4 tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 drops Gentian Violet 1% Solution
Mix all ingredients in the alcohol bottle & shake. (make sure you shake before every application).

OZARK MOUNTAIN ear cleaning solution

It is sold by nite light company.

Have use this stuff for years to clean ears of my Bluetick hounds and Chesapeake's.

TSC sells a product called R7 that works very good for an over-the-counter product. It comes as a three part system but I just use the liquid.

My dog gets 'nasty' ears all the time. My vet told me equal parts white vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Pour some in and rub her ear, wipe out (not too deep) with a tissue and your good.

My vet recomended vinegar, Iso Alcohol and water. I don't remember the ratios though, I usually just do 1/4 1/4 and half water.

I was told 50% vinegar and 50% water. Squirt it in the ears, massage it around and then dry it out with cotton - twice a day while the problem is there.

Try keeping some cotton on hand and drying out his ears with it after he is done swimming. My experience is that trouble starts when the ears are left wet inside after water work. Also seems young dogs are more prone to it. Good luck.

The best thing that I can recommend is a dilute chlorhexidine (brand name = Nolvasan) solution. Any vet office will carry it, some pet stores do also. Typically will come already diluted, but if you use large amounts of it (multiple dogs, frequent usage) your vet might be willing to sell you a bottle of the full strength stuff and you can mix it yourself. It is what we used to call "Carolina Blue" -- the color of the UNC Tarheels. We dispensed it in a plastic bottle that was like the old-fashioned mustard containers with the conical tip, so you could just squirt some in each ear, massage it in and then stand back and let them shake. Do that every time your dog is done playing in the water for the day and you shouldn't have any problems. Alex

Alex-
I'll have to try the CHX solution! Lord knows we have enough ear issues in Alabama.

Are you looking to move to North Alabama? I need an associate!

Just make sure you use the solution, not the scrub-- you'll never get the bubbles out if you use the scrub.

I might take you up on the associate offer, we moved to NW Ohio from New Orleans post-Katrina, and I just can't take another winter. Alex
