Duck calls

Could any of you veteran duck hunters recommend an easy duck call, for a child (14 year old) whom I'm introducing to the sport this season, that would be easy for him to blow. Maybe a call that will produce a good pitch that a beginner could easily learn to call with ? I thank you all in advance for your consideration in answering this question.

I don't know how far you are away from East Hartford, Ct., but on the 10th and 11th of Sept. is the Waterfowl Festival. There will be a kids calling contest that Buck Gardner puts on and the kids each get a call. Also on Sunday there is a goose and duck calling competition.
Thanks Pete

I personally like the Zink's PH-2 Power Hen. I have the acrylic version and it is easy to blow and has a deep raspy tone that I like.

I bought my buddy's kid the PH-2 polycard with the instructional dvd (about $20) for a birthday present. In a short time he sounded pretty good, good enough that he's called in his own mallards. You can always trim the reeds down a hair to make it easier to blow.

That's just my opinion and everyone has their own preferences. Hope it helped.

That's good advice from pete.

As a general rule double reeds are easier to use, and more forgiving for a beginner. There are a ton of models to choose from.

I got my daughter a winglock double, but there are a ton of good calls to choose from.

Maybe one of the call makers from the forum will chime in and add thier opinion.

I like the old Olt DR115 or a Yetzen sure shot. They sound good for the money and they're easy to blow. I don't know why but I like wooden duck calls for some reason.

Primos Wench. Great cheap call. Double reeds seem much easier for new callers to learn on.

I just got buck gardners spitfire it has spit tech. So it will never stick even when wet. I ran it under the sink and it blew like normal. I like buck gardners calls. Very user friendly. Also what jode said about a double reed is right on.

I like the Haydel calls the DR 85 is a good double reed duck call and it is easy to blow as well and with it being acrylic it does,nt swell like wood and the reeds dont stick.
Take care and God Bless

Its all about Building that Bond.

check these fellas out on ebay. neat story it is a friend of mine and his 16 year old son turning them in the basement for fun and to spend time together. I was by their house on Friday while they were tuning calls. He sends them out easy to blow, double reed and a nice finish. cost is not bad either, the one I picked up is replacing a Don Dennis call on my string for this season.

I'm with Eddie on the Haydel's, the Red legged mallard is about 25 bucks and is really a great duck call.

my first call was the origonal duck commander, it easy to blow and sounds good. but since it has a rubber wedge the wedge shrinks to much when it gets to be 0degrees out but the guys from duck commander sent me a replacement and it sounds great in all temps now. i have the dr-85 to and is very easy to blow and sounds good.
the echo timber call is a little more expensive ($50) but it sounds awesome, this one is a little harder to blow but it is my favorite call so far.

not to hyjack the thread but i went to cabelas last night and played with the RNT diablo, if i hadn't already spent $300 i would have bought that call too

I like the Primos Wench. Easy to blow, doesn't need a lot of air, and you can do every call needed to kill ducks. I also like it because the call will not break or stick in cold weather. That call is so ducky, you could probably do very well in a calling competition.

Yentzen Sure Shot (not the deluxe), first call I ever had and still carry it 35 years later into the marsh. Double reed, easy to blow. Great volume, can get low and ducky, easy feed chuckles, very inexpensive.

After winning many calling championships and having drawers full of $200+ competition calls, that the last thing I want to have with me in the marsh..In my humble opinion, the good old Haydels DR-85 (DR=double reed) is my go to call everytime. people can say all they want about spit tech technology,,when slobber gets driven between two reeds, guess what they do..they stick..when they stick, they don't sound as raspy as they do when they are dry..what do I do,,pick up another one off my lanyard thats dry and use it until it's wet and grab another dry one..I have 4 or 5 DR-85's on me at all times when hunting..they are very cheap to buy and very easy to operate..any Quality call is a musical instrument and they don't come out of the box sounding like a duck or goose unless the operator has done his homework and practiced proper notes..There are many good cheap calls on the market these days, but a Double Reed is the way to go for ease of operation, and you don't need to spend more then $20 to sound as good as any old nasty hen mallard out there..Good luck in your decision..Ernie

I asked my 12 year old son which call he'd reccomend and he thought the Hunters Specialties Loudmouth (you'll have to search to find one) and the Primos Phat Lady ( https://shop.primos.com/...yjagged-ice-red.aspx ) are great calls for the price. He should know, he's tried or owned just about every call known to man.

Your own kid didn't recommend the Eric Patterson primo exceptional duck call? Grounded for a week I say......

Yeah I know. But I did ask him to name a COMMERCIAL call that is easy to blow. Besides, I've not turned a call in over a year and don't see it happening anytime soon. Retirement project.....
