Duck hunt in Devil's Lake ND...

Some Fellow Hunters and I are planning a duck/pheasant hunt near Devil's Lake, ND. Does anyone have any advice or knowledge of the area? I would like to find a cabin to stay in as well. Any words of wisdom? Is it too big of water to hunt out of a Sneak boat? Should we only take Jon boats? So excited and so far to Go!

That thing gets rough in a heartbeat... and is BIG water... jon boats are a risk... unless you know the weather and are good at the wheel.

Mr. Nowack is correct. Sneak box will work - if pulling a trailer pack yer wheel bearings Real Good, and expect breakdowns. The lake has gotten so large in such a short period of time, LOTS of farms,
fences, etc in the water. Use Caution at ALL times. Finding a place to stay can be tricky, as a revolving door of hunters from all over the country go in and out of the area. First trips anywhere are a
time to reconnoiter. Just like anywhere - build friendships and Doors open. Good Luck and enjoy yourself.

Hunting the main lake? man I would pick my days and pick my spots carefully whether a jon boat or sneak box. I havent hunted the big lake, but it can get windy here in ND and that lake can get nasty. Seems like people die every year around the state because people try to use small boats on water that aren't a fraction of the size of Devils lake and under estimate just how windy it gets. I don't think there are a lot of pheasants in that area as well, the whole state is still rebounding and that has always been a real marginal area.

That is all helpfull information. I have never been in that area, so every bit of information helps. I'll have to ask the other hunters how much they want to hunt pheasant. I would rather waterfowl hunt the whole time but trying to satisfy everyone. I'm thinking I can talk them into feild hunting one day, hunting the big water an other day and maybe hunting some potholes a third day. I think I'll leave the sneak boats home since it sounds like it could be dangerous in one, for the first hunt anyway. Thanks for your input and please keep em coming!!

Go online and download a plots guide. I don't hunt the Devils Lake area but it is a big state. The areas I hunt a boat is not needed. I can get by with a marsh seat and a layout blind to hunt water. Not saying there aren't places I could hunt out of a marsh boat, but I dont need it.

ok. We hunt a lot of the time, in areas that boats cannot for that reason alone! we would like to try this also while we were there!

Devils lake area would not be my first choice for freelancing a hunt. I havent hunted the area in years primaily because of how much land is locked up with guides and leases. But the state as a whole is seeing in increase in posted land, farmers just getting sick and tired of all the hunters, Res and NR.

I use my ducker a lot in the fall when chasing Redheads and Cans, I don't have to but it allows me to get on the X others can't get to.
