Duck hunting books? (Stories?)

I was looking on amazon, and wow, who knew there was so much out there? I am going to try to find something at the library.

Does anyone have good suggestions for purchasable books from amazon? Ones that aren't rare finds costing a zillion bucks. "The last of the market hunters" really caught my eye. So did many others.

Just curious for recommendations from my fellow afflicted.

Paul~

There were a couple of threads over the past year on a similar topic. I think one was about the gunning book you read every year. Being a native Long Islander, my favorite is Connett's "Duck Shooting Along the Atlantic Tidewater". But, Ray Holland's "Shotgunning in the Lowlands" is a close second and Heilner's "A Book on Duck Shooting" and Camp's "Duckboats,Blinds and Decoys" always gets re-read. Every midwesterner should own/read Gordon MacQuarrie's "Old Duck Hunters" books.

In any event, building a book collection on this topic is its own fun.

All the best,

SJS

Ditto on gunning the atlantic tide water. I love rereading that book and dreaming about what it must have been like.....

The Duck Hunter's Book - Edited by Lamar Underwood, The Amwell Press. Very good stories from all the great writers, taken from the books, and articles they wrote. Even though I have almost all the books most of the stories came from, I consider The Duck Hunter's Book, a must have. You will not be disappointed .

besides anything by Gene Hill

i reread the two by Keith C. Russell every now and then

"The Duck-Huntingest Gentlemen

and

For Whom the Ducks Toll

although I also have all the others listed so far and recommend them as well

I bought my scull from a member of this site. He was one of the nicest people i have met and he gave me some cd's of gene hill stories read by gene hill. I have wanted to hunt grouse and hear the quails bob-white, bob-white after hearing a few of his stories. Oh and spend my life savings on a custom greener too, haha.

He is an amazing writer. His books are good for the deer stand. Read story look around and repeat.

If your looking for the older books a few titles I have included in my collection over the years you would enjoy seeking out on amazon or ebay
"American Duck Shooting" - George Bird Grinnell
"Misty mornings moonless nights" - Norm strung
"successful waterfowling" - Zack taylor
"Duck decoys" - Eugene connett
"Duck Decoys & How to rig them"-Ralf Coykendall
And like Mr. Sanford pointed out Connetts book "Duck shooting along the atlantic tidewater" is a favorite of mine as it covers alot of old L.I. shooting.
Anything by Nash Buckingham...
"training your retriever" - James Lamb Free
If you frequent the fall shows like Tuckerton or the L.I. duckboat show or similar shows you will often find these titles and others for sale at very cheap pricing or they can be found on the internet.
Mind you these are all very old books long out of print but
great reads especially those late fall nights leading up to the new season they always get me fired up.
Much more so than the newer publications

The Outlaw Gunner by Walsh is a classic and everyone should own one. I'm lucky enough to have a signed copy but I believe it was reprinted so you should have no problem finding one.

Ed Zern, though not strictly a duck hunting writer, for gems like this:

Although written many years ago, Lady Chatterley's Lover has just been reissued by Grove Press, and this fictional account of the day-to-day life of an English gamekeeper is still of considerable interest to outdoorminded readers, as it contains many passages on pheasant raising, the apprehending of poachers, ways of controlling vermin, and other chores and duties of the professional gamekeeper. Unfortunately one is obliged to wade through many pages of extraneous material in order to discover and savor these sidelights on the management of a Midland shooting estate, and in this reviewer's opinion this book can not take the place of J. R. Miller's Practical Gamekeeping.

If you have trouble finding the Outlaw Gunner, I know the Chesapeake Bay maritime museum in St. Michaels, Maryland has reprints. I picked up a copy last summer for a friend who was unable to find it in stock online. I think it was around $20.
