Duck Hunting in Jackson, MI

I have Duck Boat #1 and two sons ready for the opening weekend in Southern Michigan this weekend. We have been scouting Grass Lake in Jackson County, but I am looking for suggestions for an alternate location. Grass Lake is very close to a major express way and will get a lot of pressure, especially opening weekend. I would like to put my sons and I on ducks and I am looking for suggestions.

Is there anyone out there willing to share their honey hole?

Thank you in advance!

I've never hunted Grass Lake specifically. Is it even huntable? I seem to remember it being largely encircled by cottages and homes. Be aware that just because a lake has a public access/launch doesn't mean it is open to public hunting. You need to be hunting the lake adjacent to public land or have landowner permission. Might not be any pressure if you have permission from a landowner on a lake with no public land.

Opening weekend will be tough wherever you go. I have had some luck hunting smaller pothole lakes in the area of bigger lakes like Grass Lake. When the ducks get tired of getting blasted at on the big lake they will look to the smaller lakes in the area. A small spread with 1/2 dozen decoys will look pretty good to them. I've never gotten a limit this way, but can get a few ducks on a good day.

After the first few weekends and some good cooler weather, I would suggest hitting some of the managed areas. These are generally pretty accessible and will get you and your kids into some ducks.

If your kids are old enough and you have the boat for it, you aren't too far from Lake Erie and the Detroit river for some diver hunting. Weekends in late October and November will be busy, but there is room to spread out. It goes without saying that boating on the big waters in the fall can be dangerous. Make sure you and your boat are well prepared if you want to hunt the big waters.

The west and north shore of Grass Lake has no cottages and there are cat tales in the center. The bottom is very soft, so wading into the water is out of the question.

I do have a 16ft jon boat that is decked out with the Northern Flight blind with lots of grass. I will take a picture and post it to the site. My sons are 16 & 15, and they are excited to get some ducks. Last year was saw quite a few but only had shots at a couple. One son did shoot his first mallard which was a lot of fun.

There are a few small puddles in the area, that is good advise to set up there during the early and more busy days of the season.

Thanks for the response.

Tim,

You're also pretty close to the Waterloo Recreation area. There are a lot of smaller waters (and some bigger ones) there that are huntable. Here's a link to a map of the area:

But is the land public? If I understand the michigan riparian laws correctly, the lake is split in pie fashion, with the hunting rights on the waters above remaining in the hands of the land owners. Fishing and boating is open on these waters, but hunting rights are not, unless the shoreline in that part of the lake is public.

I'll echo what Craig said...if there is a public launch, and public shore that is open to hunting, it will be crouded opening day. I choose to avoid the crouds and find hidden potholes or other small bodies of water untill the craziness tapers off. I fully understand wanting to get your boys into some ducks and wish I could be of more help, I would try to find a farmer with a small pond or wide creek for the opener, then get the boys out in the boat after that. Crouded hunting situations always bringout the worst in people...not a great introduction for young duck hunters.

Beat of luck
Chuck

There is public land, although a very small section. I have a DNR buddy who lives in the area, I will contact to get his opinion.

Thanks!

Thanks Doug,

We will get out and scout around the area tonight. It looks like we are going to have some "blue bird" weather over the weekend, but it will be great to be out and spending some high quality time with my guys!

Do you know if their is a Duck Hunting club in the Jackson area?

Best of Luck to you!
