Duckboat registration in MN

I've been building a Black Brant 3 over the summer and need to start thinking about getting a hull identification number from the Coast Guard or State DNR...is anyone familiar with the steps necessary to getting a HIN and state ID number for "backyard" boats? I've read "Safety Standards for Backyard Boat Builders" published by the Coast Guard, but I'm not sure what the state's standards and licensing/inspection requirements are.

I intend to use the boat for things other than duck hunting, so I'll need some kind of registration number (I think MN allows duck boats on the water without registration during duck season).

Trying to benefit from your knowledge and experience here. Thanks guys.

Kevin,The good news is that in Minn. (the state where nothing is permited) does not require a H.I.N. of any kind. Just go to your closest goverment center and tell them that you built a boat and it cost $_ _ ._. A lot easier than registering a home built trailer. You will be issued a number to put on the boat bow both sides, a registration sticker and that is it. Hope you bring her to La Crosse. It is easier to have the number when you decide to go for a joy ride when the season is closed. (like at LaCrosse, hint, hint). what a good idea, maybe I'll take the 'ol Broadbill for a spin tommorrow and see if it still runs. ;-). Good luck and maybe we should get together to run the boats.

That's it?!? I was expecting to have to go to the nearest Coast Guard district office (St Louis, MO) and have some type of clipboard inspection that I would fail miserably. That's great news.

I will bring the boat to LaCrosse. It may not be complete, but should be well along. I saw Brian R's BB 3 last year as well as your Poke Boat and hunting outfit/mobile command center. Awesome. It was fun to be around a bunch of duck hunting enablers and keep the addiction strong.

Thanks Tom. See you in Wisconsin.

Kevin,
Just to make sure anyone who follows this thread is not confused- I have a Devlin Poleboat not a plastic pokeboat. I'm sure they may work ok but this one is one I built not bought. This year I plan on bringing my 3rd build, an Armstrong Broadbill. This one has had 10 hard years but I decided rather than send it down the road to give her a second life and spent about a week on her fixing and improving. Can't wait til LaCrosse, that has always been a good time. Give me a PM or call, I would love to see your progress.
