Early Beaver (NDR)

Howdy Steve,

We are on the very northern edge of the Southern Tier.

Unit 9-H. The land of POSTED signs, few public areas and major antler worship. But a short drive south to much more NY public access to fish and hunt than a person can explore in a lifetime. I can be in Galeton, PA in a hour and 40min. Not a long drive but many 30mph speed limit villages and towns to go thru, and good old Wellsville, NY the home of Gabby Hayes. Letchworth State Park is about 12 miles away from our home.

If ya like books, Southern Tier by Arch Merrill is a very good read.

Glad ya got yer truck back. A outdoors person without their "Steed" is a lost soul indeed.

Happy trapping!

Greg...No Adirondacks trapping for me this year. I opted for the Maine license instead...and unfortunately never got to use it. So you mentioned Lee Marvin's sable hat. You would probably be wanting to go with Pine Marten, not fisher. That is the US equivalent of Russian Sable. Though both would make some awesome hats. But yes, both fisher and marten are open for trapping in the Adirondacks and Maine. Fisher is an unlimited bag in the Adirondacks, marten you can harvest 6. Maine is 25 of either species.

if you'd like advice on sites where we'd love you to trap beaver so they stop building dams in fishways, let me know before next season. I can think of a half dozen sites where targeted and aggressive beaver removal would be welcome.

That's correct Steve! Thanks for clearing that up.And either one would make a great hat in that style, don't you think? Plus, I think it's important some of us wear a little fur once in a while!

I've wondered about getting a blanket made of Pelt, Seems like it would be the warmest thing ever.

Do you use the meat for any special dishes? Seems like it would be good in a crock pot.

Yes Todd, I've cooked the legs and loins with orange juice in the crock pot. Sometimes throwing a little pork in with it too. Then shred and mix with barbeque sauce. My boys would all love it on sandwiches, even taking it leftover in their school lunches and sharing with friends.

Aside from that, I've baked the loins in a casserole dish with a can of cream of mushroom soup and a packet of onion soup mix. Have also given hind quarters to friends and family that smoked them, that was tasty too!

Steve, it's good to see you're back out trapping! I plan to get back into it after duck season. Is that basket from the lady in Natural Bridge? I believe that her's are made from some kind of cane, not ash. I've got one of her baskets that I only use for ice fishing now, as its starting to wear out a bit from a decade of carrying heavy traps and beaver.

Jeff...I'll shoot you a message about trapping some of those beaver. I may try to get some use out of that license in the spring.

Greg...beaver blanket is the plan. That and a couple of hats and some gloves. Just gotta go catch that fur.

John...Yes, I think that's the same lady. Just outside of Watertown. I wasn't aware her baskets were made of anything but ash. They sure seem pretty solid still. And very high quality for sure. Have fun on the trapline when you get out there again.
