East coast duck related must visit road trip places?

In the last week of September my girlfriend and I will driving the east coast on our way to a wedding in Virginia on Oct 1st. We have planned to go into DC and to see the Ward Museum but that leaves us a couple of days to see other things. We are both history buffs and love museums and with my decoy addiction being at the point of no return I feel like I should seek out as much decoy exposure as possible. From Northwest Vermont to the top of Virginia are there anymore must sees for the history and decoy addict that the all power wealth of knowledge that complies this page can come up with? I have the whole last week of Sept.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure the Ward Museum is in Salisbury Maryland, on the eastern shore. Not too close to DC. My daughter went to Salisbury State many years ago. Great place.

Tuckerton Decoy and Gunning show is sept 24 and 25 here in south jersey. Right across the street from the Tuckerton Seaport Museum. Lots of decoy and duckboat related displays.

Ed,
In Sept. the weekend of the 24th I will be up in Lowell VT. (my son is getting married)Are you going to be gone that weekend?
Pete

Bob I think its a couple hours but away from DC but what's a couple hours if I have a week to make it to Virginia. We have decided to make this our vacation for the year. We had planned to go to Anchorage Alaska for the DU convention but I'm replacing my roof instead. Stupid homeownership won't let me do fun things.

Smithsonion Museums in Washington would take a couple weeks it self. NRA museum in Falls Church, Harve De Grace decoy museum or War Museum. There are tons of places in Washington, US Mint, FBI and others.
Virginia has alot, maybe Dave D can suggest some. Have fun...

And that is correct, the Ward Brothers Museum is in Salisbury Md, a couple hours from DC. It is an awesome museum.

Havre De Grace Decoy Museum is a must see. It's not far from DC, on the northern part of the Chesapeake Bay.

If you are traveling leisurely, don't be afraid to stop and any of the little "Mom-n-Pop" shops along way too. Not really museums, but a lot of those little shops feature local, unknown carvers.

Pete I might still be here Saturday I'll have to talk with my girlfriend. I think we had planned to leave that day but I'll have just finished my Friday night shift. When will you be getting into Vermont? If you came up I-89 you could have a real nice scenic ride right by my house on your way to Lowell.

Jon that's me I'm a local (Vermont) unknown carver. I'll keep my eye out. I have a cousin in DC that I'm hoping to visit while there so that might take the first weekend of my trip. I think unfortunately I will miss Tukerton.

Ed,
If in VA. you could visit the museum of the Confederacy and other Civil war sites. I highly recommend Gettysburg not a far drive from D.C. and is also a must see. If you make it there stop in at O'Rorke's, good beer and good food. Heading up the Hudson...then Check out Wet point and Constitution Island. I will be there on the 23rd of April doing living history of sorts and doing a live fire exercise with weapons from the American Revolution to modern times. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a British Sten gun and an German MG42.

If in Jersey and a duck hunter than Tuckerton seaport is an absolute must! Well good luck and enjoy your trip.

kjladd1 I was just there talking with some staff carvers Thursday. I've been to their winter decoy exhibit twice in two months. It is only part of their collection as the building that normally houses them is being restored, it should be done this summer.

Mt. Vernon is certainly worth the time and walk. Very impressive homestead and museums. Visiting General Washington's grave is a must.

Like noted, you could spend a week in DC alone and not see everything worth seeing.
Tops on my list:

Walking the Mall, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Korean War Memorial, WWII Memorial, Washington Monument & the Reflecting Pool. That's at least 1/2 day.
Smithsonian complex is simply amazing, the "new" Native American Museum and old Natural History Museums are must-sees, another full day.
Air & Space is mind boggling, and if you have time to go out the Annex at the airport, do it.

Second on Mt. Vernon.

Ed~

If you'll be visiting the Eastern Shore, check out the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels. ( http://cbmm.org/ ) I was there more than 30 years ago - but lots of waterfowling stuff then.

Also, you will be traveling at a great time to see shorebirds in some of the NWRs on your way down.

Have great trip!

Steve, usually, the little buggers are here about the time that the horseshoe crabs come ashore to lay eggs. Then, they are quite abundant. Used to see some yellowlegs, avocets, sanderlings in the fall.

Ed, give me a call.....I grew up on the Eastern Shore....And yes, you should strongly consider Havre De Grace, the Ward Museum and the Cheasapeake Maritime Museum in St Michaels. If you go to the Maritime Museum, you should drive about 10 minutes south on the same road to Tilghman Island. My sister runs a country store there with out standing baked goods and sells my decoys there. If you think you will be in the area, we can do an online introduction before you leave Vt and she can give you a quick tour of the area.

I go along with John Bourbon and Steve Sanford in reference to the museum in St Michaels, it is awesome. If you are in Easton, stop in to Albrights Gun Shop. Larry is the owner and an old pal. Larry's gun shop is like a museum, you will love it! If you ever thought of gunning around that area in the fall, Larry is the one to see. Rich

Yep, Albright's is the only decent gun store around. That's where I bought my 10 ga Remington 1894. And if you're visiting Easton, you might as well check out all the little shops along that street, they have very nice waterfowl and Eastern Shore art work for display/sale.
