Electric Smoker

I'm looking to upgrade my electric smoker from a Luhn-Jenson Little Chief to something I can control the heat, cook time, and smoke on.
Any suggestions on makes or models?

To keep this duck related, it's hard to beat a good smoked duck breast or goose jerky in the blind.

Thanks,

Joe,

This subject came up recently with a couple guys I shoot with. I have the same problems you have with your so was interested in the discussion. One of the guys has a smoker he got at Cabelas for about $200 that he says works great. He can get the heat up if he needs it which has been my problem. There are times in the fall or winter that I have to wrap mine in old blankets and sleeping bags to get the heat over 120. I looked at the Cabelas smokers when I was there two weeks ago and thought the $200 variety was pretty decent though I didn't buy it.

A friend gave me his old electric smoker a few years ago before he moved and I could never keep the temp. up to where it needed to be. I have had a lot better luck using a large Char Broil kettle grill. I move the coals to one side and put in two red bricks to make a divider and place a cast iron pan with water on top of that to catch the drippings and keep the meat moist. I can keep the coals at 200 to 350 fairly easily and throw in 3-4 good chunks of hickory to smoke. I've smoked a number of turkeys, pork butts, country ribs, mussels, and some fish this way. Works great!

I have a 13 year old Brinkman smoker/grill that works great for smoking chickens, boston butts, etc... Converts to a great grill for shrimp, burgers & sausage as well.
Never tried the electric smokers, but my old Brinkman sure works great. Versatile too.
I think they still make them.

I ended up purchasing a Bradley Smoker over the weekend. It seems like it's going to fit the bill, digitally controlled temp., auto smoke (up to 8hrs), insulated smoking chamber, 6 racks, etc...

Thanks again for the replies. For anyone interested I'll post a review of the unit after I get a chance to break it in good.

I bought a gas smoker last fall from cabelas and it works great. The only problem I have is when the outside temperature drops it is hard to get the smoker up to proper temp but that could probably be fixed by simply changing out to a larger burner.
