fairing compound

Epoxy / microballoon mix sands nice and easy.
Epoxy / silica mix is very, very hard and I wouldn't recommend using it as a fairing compound.

Hi Andy,

I've used micro balloons mixed with epoxy to fair out fiberglass seams and the like and it is easy to mix and sand. You want the epoxy to have the consistency of runny ketchup/catsup. A few coats with sanding in between should level out the imperfections and what not. It is wicked easy to sand with 150 grit paper. I probably would not sand it with a power sander as it will take it right off. Just a 3M sanding block should work fine.

I have fairing compound from Us Composites. I am assuming it is micro-balloons with a reddish pigment. Use thin of thick epoxy? I only ask because I am trying to get rid of some thick stuff I bought and can't find much of a use for.

Yes, it should be a reddish powder. I've only used it in regular epoxy and not the thick stuff, so I can't say how it would work. Try it first on a noncrucial area of the boat to see how it goes on and sands. It has been a while since I have used it, but I believe there is a mixing ratio guide on the container.

Best,
Nate
