A few weeks maybe a month ago A member mentioned a good product for removing oxidation from paint on fiberglass boat in the coarse of a post. I thought I saved it, searched and searched and now claim defeat. If anyone knows a good product please let me know.

Thanks

I was the product developer for the 3M Marine line of products specifically developed to remove oxidation from gelcoat. We have a whole line of products to use depending upon the severity of the oxidation. If it is heavy oxidation, use the Restorer and Wax product, if it is light oxidation use the Cleaner and Wax product. Both require the use of a rotary buffer capable of spinning at 1800 rpm. Also note that while this will do a great job removing oxidation, once a boat has severe oxidation it is a chore to keep it from returning.

One other point. In your post you mention fierglass and paint. If your boat is painted, not gelcoated, do not use these 3M products as they will make quick work out of the paint (ie - great paint remover). Products that work well to bring out luster on automotive paint do not have the muscle required to remove oxidation from gelcoat. The flip side is that what works great on oxidation removal from gelcoat works porrly on car paint.

Please email me with any other questions you may have.

Thanks, Mark. Pretty sure I'll need the heavy duty remover. Need to check w/builder about gel or not I think it is.

Thanks,

Mark,
what a small world. We use the MMM line at work over most others.
The pads and other goodies are also a great help.

What ones do you use? I had a great time developing that product line as it was during the winter in MN and all the testing had to be done in Florida during our winter. Test boats were in Fort Myers so I spent a large part of that winter down there. Great times to be sure. First product mixed together was in Ft. Myers and one in one of those little cone shaped water cups. Worked right off the bat and then the true development work began.

I remember when it was first launched down at the IBEX show in Florida. I had spend 2 weeks straight at the plant scaling the products up and went directly from the plant to the show with the products packed in boxes in the cargo hold. Got in way after midnight and the show started at 9:00 in the morning. Talk about cutting it close. The majority of our booth was dedicated to this product line. Would have been a mess if the products hadn't been made.

While at the IBEX show, we were approached by a guy who owned a large marina where a big oil spill had just occurred. He wanted to know if our stuff would buff out the oil stains from the gel. I was fairly certain it would and off he went. It worked better than all else he had tried and we got some very good press from helping him out.

Hope you like the products. If you have any questions, give me a jingle.

So what product do you recommend for protection of fiberglass that has no oxidation but I don't want a high luster shine?
