i am going to build my first duckboat and everyone i talk to said you guys are the ones to come to for advice. wondering if there are some boat plans i should stay away from and who makes the best first timer plains. i was thinking of making a boat like the one that is explained on the main index page.

What do you want the boat for? the Kara is good for marsh hunting on guy and a dog. I wouldn't limit yourself to a real easy design if ti doesn't fit your needs. All the Devlin boats (some very substantial big water ones) are buildible by the novice.

i will use the boat more or less very larg sloughs and some bigger lakes i live in the willmar area witch is in kandiyohi county of minnesota i have a kayak for marsh hunting and i was going to buy a boat but building one that you can be proud of is way better. also i am good with my hands i was a carpenter for four years and a welder and have a pretty decent shop but at the same time this is my first boat and i dont want to start somthing i cant finish . thank for the advice.

You can build something pretty nice if you can commit 2-300 hours, like the devlin Black brant, which is a great boat for MN.

I've seen guys building Kara boats and putting a lot of time into them. In my understanding, origionally, they were considered a kind of throw-away to be banged out quickly, hunted a couple years and build a new one when waterlogged.

Anyone with decent skills, skil saw, router and sander can build a devlin duckboat.

The BBIII was my first boat build 5 years ago and I couldn't of been prouder. Was shocked at how nice it turned out for having never done it before.

The Devlin book is a must in my opinion. Good resource to relate to when needed.

Same with this website..

Good luck

Nathan, First off I just live in Brooklyn Center and have built four boats so far so whatever one you decide on keep me in mind for a resource. Unfortunatly I built 2 before I discovered this site. Any of the Devlin designs are doable, the real problem is deciding which one is the right one to build next. I have an Armstrong Broadbill with a 25 Evinrude and a Devlin Poleboat. I think the next one will be either a BB3 or a Scaup. If you would like to try either one just give me a call or PM. This sight ids the best thing ever for duckboat builders, great people and good advice. Good Luck

Nathan, Hi I'm new to this site and to duck boat building. I wanted a small/marsh boat that I could pick up and put it into my pick-up. I actually started building a modified Kara Robber from pictures the I found on another site. Then I found this site. Only change in plans after finding this site was to switch from polyseter resin to epoxy. I never used the polyester and returned it for epoxy. I started building using West epoxy, then switch to US Composities epoxy, somebody here suggested it. Itis about half to 1/3 the price. Always I've been posting pictures as I build under, http://duckboats.net.nmsrv.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=14930;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread .
