First Hunt of the New Year - Great South Bay

All~

After putting my daughter Emily and husband Folke on the plane back to Berlin on Monday afternoon, I joined old friends Craig Kessler and Fred Wertz on the Bay Tuesday morning. Freddie has had a bunch of surgeries this fall - and so it was a nice surprise to learn that he was physically able to join us.

Fortunately, we had FINALLY gotten some cold. The mercury started dropping on Sunday and it read 13 F when I arose Tuesday morning. It was enough to skim over most of our freshwater ponds but not enough to make ice on the salt water.

We rigged late morning - after the tide had begun to drop - and Freddie shot this nice Drake Black Duck within moments of our settling down. This photo shows those black markings - the "tobacco lips" - that separate the face from the bill.

We rigged about 2 dozen Black Duck stool and 6 or 8 other puddlers. Although I shot them with neither gun nor camera, we had Brant through the rig most of the day. We were hunting on the 5th - but the Brant season did not open until yesterday - the 6th. It was a great pleasure just to watch and listen - without worrying about shooting. I never tire of sharing the Bay with these graceful birds.

Here is that Drake Black again.

Craig called in 8 Mallards. They put on a nice show, circling a few times and passing right over the boat on their final approach, just before they cut back into the rig.

Freddie was feeling well enough to retrieve the Hen Greenwing while Craig was fetching a Drake.

We all misID'd this bird - because she came right on the deck all the way - skirting the decoys until Craig folded her up at the head of the rig. The "Gadwall" and "Greenwing" turned out to be a young-of-the-year Hen Wigeon. Note the lack of iridescence in the speculum.

A fine start to Ought-Six. I plan to get back down a couple more times before the Long Island Zone closes on the 31st.

All the best,

SJS

Fantastic, thanks for sharing! Great photos .
Looks a lot like our marshes. One question: What is your tidal range there?

Good morning, Carl~

Glad you enjoyed! The tides in this vicinity are between 2 and 3 feet. We were surprised that it never wet off as much as we anticipated. Making sure one does not get stranded with a 17-foot TDB plays a major role in picking our spots.

All the best,

SJS

Our tidal range is normally 1 to 1.5', with our lowest tides in winter, but we only get one high & one low per day. So if you get stuck, you are stuck for hours!
Most years I have to worry about setting up too shallow. A number of times I have had to move the boat to deeper water, abandon the hunt before I planned or got stuck..
However this year, the entire northern Gulf is seeing tides 6" to 1' above predicted levels.
Throw in near record flows coming down the Mobile Bay watershed right now and we have more water than I have ever seen during duck season. Spots that would normally have no water on low tide have over a foot sometimes 2 feet of water.
Too much water in fact, many of our grassbeds have too much water for the puddler to reach the grass & other food.
Its a strange year.

Great story and shots Steve!

We also had the tide stay up over our way on Tuesday, though I didn't mind and neither did the mallards...

Welcome back to the marsh Steve nice pics, been getting better these last few weeks. Always welcome to tag along sometime, Tuesday of last year we filmed that snowy broadbill hunt! Time flies Hopefully we see that snow again soon!

Great hunt! Hunting has been excellent these past few days with the marshs frozen. That spot is perfect for those conditions.

Looks like a great hunt Steve. And agreed, those ebbing tides are always an important factor that warrant constant memory.
To a happy and healthy 2016.
