Flood forecast question....

This has been a pretty good winter for snow and cold. I've starting my spring flood plans the past several weeks hoping to stay ahead of it this year and was wondering what you guys in the upper midwest along the Mississippi river are hearing about possible flooding. Of course a lot of things come into play with warm up and spring rains. Here is a current snow coverage map. It does look a bit funny that the Twincities on this map seems devoid of snow. How'd you guys do that?

The map doesn't represent the LaCrosse Area too well. The only snow we have is on the North sides of the hills. The S sides are all bare, my lawn is bare. We're sposed to get 4"-10" tomorrow, we'll see. Ice went out on the channel Mon. and Tues. with no real rise. There was some talk by the weather service that LaCrosse wouldn't have flooding but Gays Mills (Kickapoo) might. Tis good to be ready but as of now, no gloom and doom predicted.

PS just found this on MSNBC

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said more than 250 communities in a dozen states are experiencing flood conditions this week.
The spring flood forecast said:
  • Heavy winter snow combined with recent rain indicates parts of Wisconsin and Illinois should see minor to moderate flooding, with as much as a 20 to 30 percent chance of major flooding on some rivers in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

that purple band running North and South in the Washington....thats the Cascades....shows less than a foot.....Mt. Baker has 30 feet of snow on it....Sunrise on the North Side of Rainier has closer to 40 feet. Mt. Baker just North of me has had over FIFTY FEET of snow this winter and most of that is still sitting on the ground making the skiers happy.....

Doesn't answer your question but if the rest of that map is as wrong as Washington is then its worthless....

Here in southern Wisconsin we've had more snow than the northern part of the state causing very little frost if any in the ground. The melting snow has been settling into the ground with some run off causing moderate flooding in the small streams here. The Mississippi will get some of that but our levels here depend on that coming from the north. They are forecasting 7 to 8 inches of new snow starting tonight at midnite running thru tomorrow. Hopefully that too will settle rather than run off.
Sounds like you enjoyed your Mexican vacation. We head down to a time share just south of Playa del Carmen (Sunset fishermans)

Ed talking to some truck drivers as boz said Southern Wis has more snow than we do up here.

Even at that 12" on ground. Map is wrong as Steve said. No run off yet. River and streams Ice covered. We are in a slow melt Below frezing at night Low 30s during the day.

We are behind the melt according to the last ten years.

All this could change rapidly then I will send you a E mail to head for high ground. ( : )
 
Thanks George and Wisboz, That's good to hear. Looks like from what you guys and Steve is saying I should quit looking at these maps all together. I heard you guy's were getting snow out of this system coming though tonight and tomorrow. We're only looking for a dusting...I hope.

I always wonder about these maps. Sounds like you guys could be wiped off the map if all the snow comes sliding down on you. Watch out for the spring mudslides.
