Foggy, foggy morning

A friend called me up and said that he needed to run some gas out of his boat, did I want to go snapper fishing on the last open day of the season this year? He knows I get sea sick easily and told me that it was supposed to be a calm day.

Calm it was

And lordy was it foggy. It was the first time I was ever happy to be around someone smoking cigarettes because I was able to smell the folk we could have run over before we could see them.

As did a large pod of dolphins. Of course just as we were getting into the snapper.

We didn't get out of the fog until we were about 25 miles offshore. The fog never cleared up closer to shore and seemed to thicken as the day wore on. For whatever reason, Larry's navionics didn't have the navigation buoys turned on so heading back in to the boat ramp was pretty interesting. Visibility was no more than about 40 yards. We had to motor around barrier islands to get to the boat ramp. With visibility so bad, seeing the islands was pretty challenging. We could see them on the maps (his navionics and I had my OnX pulled up) but you can always be off just a little. So, when I saw the beach coming up swiftly I calmly turned to Larry and said, "Larry you need to turn left right now." Happily he did and he saw why not too quickly after. Once we got to the boat ramp he looked at me and was like, HOW THE HECK COULD YOU SO CALMLY TELL ME WE ARE GOING TO CRASH?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?

It still boggles his mind and thinks it is highly funny

We caught our limit of red snapper and was also able to bring home some red grouper as well.

The snapper has made for some great eating

The very best part of the day??? I wasn't sea sick once. I think it helped that it was a cool, foggy day. Seasickness happens quick for me if I get hot and can't cool down.

Congrats Dani, a memorable day for sure. I'm not a fan of fog either but have been out navigating in brail more times than I can count. Meclazine has been in my big water bag for years and recently tried the Scopalomine patch - worked great for a 60 hour offshore Tuna hunt.

And groupas too!

Was wondering where you've been! Did you do any duck hunting this year???

Great day for you and I really liked those pictures. Great wildlife there even if they don't help the fishing.

Thanks y'all!

Carl, I didn't get out duck hunting. I still need to do my story of my trip to MN this year. I had hoped to duck hunt up there and with Ed on the way back home but there were no ducks. Here in Tally, the drought is so bad and the temps so warm I hadn't seen many birds at all, even in the local ponds. I heard that Orange Lake was on fire this year for the ringnecks but with the drought it was mainly only accessible by airboat....some folk with mudmotors went but mainly airboats.

Beautiful fish Dani. 25 miles out in the fog? Not for this river rat! As a matter of fact after dang near running into a barg tied to trees on a island then beaching the boat to avoid a crash, there's only a couple short runs I'd even consider today in the fog. Sorry you didn't get any duckin in. I didn't fire a shot this year!

Yeah, I was a little on the nervous side how fast my friend was driving the boat in those conditions. But he is out there a lot soooooooooo I was like ooookay just trust him.

Then the almost beaching happened and I got really nervous how fast he continued running...but I think that was largely due to needing to be on plane in the shallow water we were in

It would have taken me the day to go 25 miles in that pea soup. Our lakes will get bad trashed with logs right at the surface from time to time
