Found shells

Unbelievable! I was able to find Kent 2 3/4 4 steel shells. The price? $36.00 a box! Think I paid about $12.00 a box in the past. And the person who found these for me said these were the cheapest! Things are beginning to look grim. And yes, I am going to buy a case. Don't want to gamble on availability in October.

Worth, there were some Kent Faststeel on rogers sporting goods. Upland faststeel in 6 shot. 2 3/4" a whole case for about $130? I saw them this morning

Worth, sorry you had to pay that much a box. When Kent 3" steel is available for $210/flat it is hard to understand why the 2 3/4" is so much more. Other than the fact that 3" steel is available and 2 3/4" steel is not. Also, you did buy some peace of mind by finding what you needed.

Mike, As things turned out I didn't buy those Kent shells at $36 a box. A very good waterfowler from this site offered to send me a case. A sporting goods store in his area went out of business last year and he purchased 17 cases. But had not this very kind offer been made, I would have gone ahead with the $36 a box price. Maybe I am just an old man who worries about a host of things, but I really question if steel loads are going to be available this coming season. One would think it they are being made now they would have been on the shelves since it is only a couple months away from the season.

Worth,
yes, 2 3/4 steel shells were a little difficult to come by in my area even prior to Covid. Bi-Mart use to be my go to place when they had their fall sales on Kent shells, but I haven't seen a box of shotgun shells on their shelves for over a year. One of the reasons I moved to a 3" Rem 1100, a couple of years ago, was the selection of 3" shells was greater in my area.

This weekend, I did find a local sporting goods store that had a few cases of 2 3/4 steel loads. I bought a couple of boxes of Kent steel 7 dove loads at $16/box. Twice what I used to pay, but I will be happy to be able hit the Sept 1 opener with shells in my pocket. I may need to run down for a few more boxes, those doves are shell burners.

This thread had me a bit worried so when the Cabela's website had some of the my favorite 3" #4 and #3 Fasteel loads available, I hustled to put an order in. They have not come yet, but in anticipation purchased a couple of stackable plastic totes because this year--unlike all past years--my ammo will be organized and I will know where to find it. I policed up the many scattered boxes of steel duck loads and filled the first tote entirely with steel loads and a few boxes of BOSS bismuth. Turns out I did not need those #3's and #4's. LOL! The second tote is mostly filled with 20 gage steel and bismuth that I used for woodcock and partridge. Mostly #7 steel, and given the limited amount of upland hunting I do, I've probably got enough bismuth to get through next season and enough steel for the next 5. (Some of my covers are near water that holds wood ducks, and I like to be able to take those shots if they present themselves--hence the non-tox.)

As a bonus, I also found 6 boxes of 50 CCI stingers in .22LR, just in time to set up the sniper perch in the upstairs window for the wood chuck that is busy with my broccoli. That's probably a 10 year supply of those. Ditto on 30-06 rounds for the deer/moose rifle. Those are in an old ammo can.

I had no idea I had so much ammo squirrelled away in various nooks and crannies. Now I need another tote to fit that order of shells that has not yet arrived!

Next step--similar organization of the muzzleloading and 12 and 20 gage target loads . . . . .

I was just looking at the Rogers site, its crazy, they basically have no steel left in stock.

I noticed this to Carl. My good friend bought 4 cases last year on one of the $89 deals that looks to have been a solid investment.

The panic buying has people buying a little extra this season as most don't expect any shells to be available come end of November. Many of the clubs around where I am are buying extra cases of shells which also doesn't help the supply. I went into one of the gun clubs and they had a half pallet of shells that just arrived. They wanted to make sure they had enough for members and guests, shell prices are costing everyone more this year.
I did go to Wal Mart and hit it just right when they were unloading Winchester Xpert shells. I purchased 7 cases as it was only $11.63 a box for 3", 1-1/8" #2 & #3 shot. It works for me, but I know many others don't like it. I ran out of Hevimetal as I was getting it for $150 a case and now it's $279 a case.
